House Republicans replace biodegradable silverware/plates with styrofoam cups, plastic
Bullshit. I have the new bulbs at home and when they reach full power (usually after about ten fucking minutes or so) they're still not as bright as incandescent bulbs. Incandescent bulbs are brighter, faster and all-around better. They might well cost more in the long run but if that's the way things work then no-one would ever take out a loan.
Nice anecdotal reply.
I also have my house lit by CF bulbs, there's nothing wrong with them. They work just as well as regular bulbs, and have continued to work long after similar incandescent bulbs would have burnt out. Whatever, just look up any scientific data like I did and they'll set you straight.
I don't really think this is something that is subject for criticism. The environmental impact biodegradable stuff had was minimal, and obviously the switch saved a good amount of money. I don't see any reason why not to cut $475,000 a year.

If your CFLs take 10 minutes to reach full power you should probably turn the heat in your house up because it's about -30C in there
I mean, really, they want to go back to incandescent lightbulbs.
Someone should donate the new kind so it won't cost government money. I think there's plenty of people who would be willing.

You probably just bought the shit ones.
The first ones I used were this horrible fucking colour which made my eyes strain, and took ages to brighten.
Next day I went out and replaced them.
Never looked back.
My CF's are dimmer, not by enough that it matters. The replacement cost isn't worth slightly brighter. I'm not even using them for the environment, I'm using them for money.

You probably have defective ones, because the ones I have are all extremely bright.
The rest of your post is bullshit.

What is with you conservatives and your hatred of the environment? Not even lack of care, but your intention to ruin it.
I actually understand the republicans here.
If I'm trying to eat a delicious goddamn steak and my fucking cutlery just starts fucking bending all over the goddamn place, I'd be trying to pass bills to knife the fucker who thought those would be a good idea.

I don't understand what they were thinking when they chose to use plastic utensils, unless they serve mushy shlop every day. I'm fairly certain that using actual silverware would cost less and produce less waste in the long run.
I get the first two examples, but not the one I've bolded here. What makes the Republican party bad for the environment (besides the obvious topic being discussed of styrofoam cups and plastic)?
Because Republicans nearly always oppose environmental legislation and attack scientists who say we're damaging the environment.
I disagree. $475k can do a lot of stuff. It's just going to waste right now.
If $475k is what it costs just to replace some cups, then clearly it can't do a lot of stuff.

I do not understand why they do that. Conservatives need to breath too.

You have to be a full blown retard to defend incandescent bulbs.
W....why?!
Because the Democrats thought it was a good idea, DUH.
I swear the Republican party exists for the sole reason of keeping good ideas from coming to fruition.
My experiences with CFLs haven't been too great, they don't seem to last all that long for me and I've had three randomly burst while in use.
Not being all too thrilled with glass tubes full of mercury vapor bursting in my home, I've been replacing them with LED bulbs. I quite like them.

It's like Reagan with Carter's solar water heaters.
I've had my CFs for like 6 years now.
Is it just me, or is the GOP becoming cartoonishly evil lately?

I don't care if my data is anecdotal; it's what I've experienced. I don't give a shit about peer-reviews when my own two eyes are telling me that the BULB IS TOO FUCKING DIM.

Perhaps you have a faulty bulb/socket
There is an old fixture in my house that CFLs simply refuse to work in.
I really don't get the controversy surrounding fluorescent lightbulbs. Compared to incandescent lightbulbs, in my experience: they're just as bright, last much longer, don't get as hot, and are generally easier on the eyes.

Well I would say that they aren't as bright (but doesnt make a difference) but they dont hurt your eyes like the other bulbs do. People just want to say there bad because they are anti environment or something.

The largest problem is mercury, and in most municipalities, they need to be delivered to the proper disposal sight. Which no one bothers to do...

It's the same all over the house.

Which brand bulbs are you buying and what is their luminosity rating? Also, tube or spiral style?
[editline]6th March 2011[/editline]
Honestly everyone should just get LED bulbs. They last three times as long as a CFL and don't have mercury in them.

And they come in multiple colors!
I do not understand why they do that. Conservatives need to breath too.
Because conservatives oppose governmental regulation. Usually they justify it either by saying that private citizens/the free market can protect the environment better than the government, or that environmental crises are a fraud dreamed up by liberals to justify more government regulation.
How did these idiots survive to adulthood? You'd think people this intensely dysfunctional would choke on a marble or something by now.

Which is unconnected to this whole story. Regardless of your opinion of the Republican party, based on this article, it made perfect sense to switch back.
But the new green cafeteria was not universally popular – even when Democrats were in charge. Diners complained the cutlery would bend or break on the point of contact with solid food.
Dan Lungren, chair of the house administration committee, said the $475,000 per year programme was too expensive and not even green. "After a thorough review of the house's composting operations, I have concluded that it is neither cost effective nor energy efficient to continue the programme," he said in a statement on his website.
Although this particular green movement had good intentions, it didn't work out.
I have a great green movement
USE METAL CUTLERY
You can fucking wash it and use it over and over again
