EDGE: The next Xbox: Always online, no second-hand games, 50GB Blu-ray and new kinect

Are you fucking serious? I have to have DRM....DRM to play a console? Microsoft. Good job setting yourself up to fail!
The next Playstation and Xbox are definitely going to have more preventive measures to combat used games, you can quote me on that. With all the rumors we've heard about it, and given recent trends and attitudes, it seems impossible that they won't have more control over used games. To what degree remains to be seen.

I could build a decent-ish gaming PC for the same price as one of these consoles at launch.
Average rig maybe. Its not going to be anything significantly better than the console for the same amount of money.
And even then. Not everyone wants to gear up in there swively chair, console is great for slouching around on the couch smashing out casual games.
You can get a decent PC for the day-one price of a console and can afford the upgrades because of the cash you save by buying during sales on Steam/GmG/GoG/Origin, some of which have stock-wide sales regularly
Not everyone wants a wide library of games. Most people I know stick to Fifa and thats about it, BF3 if they are feeling adventurous.. (sarcasm).
Like you say, its also easy to use. Console gamers never have to even think about stuff like Hardware upgrades. They can just get on with playing.
People tend to buy consoles and not have them hooked up to the internet because 1. they feel they don't need to
2. they dont use the online functionality
3. the games they buy, they like the SP functionality
I can't see the big trend with always on consoles when its harder to pirate games for them, but again, I need a press statement from Microsoft to really believe this
Stuff like this always turn out to be rumors, where it doesn't actually turn out to be as bad as it is thought out to be.
Even though it sounds asshole-ish I can't help but think that mainstream gamers tendency to be "easily satisfied" is a massive threat to the freedom and future development of the industry for consumers. People "just not caring" about the killing of used games, compulsory online subscription fees, always-on DRM, high price tags etc is what allows these things to exist and grow. I can imagine it's hard to live in a state of constant dissatisfaction though, which is why consumers take what they get as opposed to demand improvements.
I don't see the point of going "PC gaming does this stuff already" when one of the main points of a console is that it isn't PC gaming.
PC gaming gets more expansion and tinkering options, while console gaming gets more mobility and ease-of-access options. The reason that both PC and console gaming have been able to coexist is because there's a tradeoff between choosing one over the other exclusively. But if one starts to collect the negative qualities of the other market under the idea of "if they can do it we can too" then... well, all of a sudden the choice doesn't seem so hard anymore.
Well, if this is true I'll have to stay on the 360 and PC.

Additionally, the PC gets insanely good sales that the consoles pretty much never get. That more than makes up for the lack of used games, in my opinion.
People with dial up are fucked
I think the next xbox is done for if it will require it to be always online and block used game sales. Don't get me wrong I buy all of my games new unless you save a significant amount.
Always online, ridiculous amounts of ads on xbox live (even if you pay for live), no used games, no bringing your games to friends' places. Xbox is done for this generation.
You can get a decent PC for the day-one price of a console and can afford the upgrades because of the cash you save by buying during sales on Steam/GmG/GoG/Origin, some of which have stock-wide sales regularly
But yeah consoles are necessary since they're easy to use and they make up the bulk of sales and releases, and I'm really hoping that the next gen has decent specs so we get decent looking PC games.
I don't get the obsession with new game consoles just because it'll make PC games prettier. Okay yeah, sure, it will make PC graphics prettier... but then there will be NO new innovation or improvements for another seven years.

Any innovation is better than stagnation.
And it allows us to move forward with DirectX 11 as a standard, finally.
Plus we can see games done that aren't possible today.
Always online just for the Xbox to function (if I read that right)?
Microsoft stop it.
I didn't plan on getting it anyways. I'm done with consoles.
My wifi drops out all the time on my xbox, this isn't going to work with me.
Seriously though, they have to call it the Xbox³ whenever they officially announce it.
they could just call it the xCube, then the next one could be the xTesseract
forth dimensional gaming ahoy
Didn't someone before make up some complete bullshit and send it to people like this and it got published?
I'll wait until I hear something from microsoft themselves. There is no way in hell microsoft is this dumb.

That's not necessarily true. The stagnation usually occurs near the end of a console's life and, because this generation has gone on for much longer than usual, the stagnation is pretty rampant. But compare the the games we were playing in 2005 (when Xbox 360 first launched) to now. Innovations and improvements aplenty.
Microsoft is already greedy charging people $60 a year just to play online. The PS3's online is free and you can pay if you want for their Playstation Plus service which gives you free games and decent exclusive offers. Hopefully Microsoft changes their Xbox Live to become like this with the next Xbox. I mean the console itself is already expensive, the games are expensive, so why should you have to pay just to play online? This is pretty ridiculous IMO.
I told you guys, and you dumbed me.
Now what?
People with dial up are fucked
People who have dial up still were fucked to begin with.
I haven't even seen a 360 yet
Because you have no friends.
How is this going to affect rentals and services like Gamefly?
I told you guys, and you dumbed me.
Now what?
Now I'm going to do the exact same thing. Its one of the thousands of unconfirmed rumors we get every week. And seriously, people have been saying literally the exact same thing about the PS4 for longer.
How is this going to affect rentals and services like Gamefly?
Companies like them and Gamestop would lose much of their markets. Gamefly would be basically dead, while Gamestop would take a massive revenue loss since they make much of their income from used games sales.

Gamestop's stocks have already taken a hit from the rumors, actually.
The No second hand games deal would be fine if games weren't fucking 60 bucks a pop
I told you guys, and you dumbed me.
Now what?
It's still just rumors and wild speculation. I'll wait for a credible source, rather than "A SOURCE TOLD US" which could be anything from some dude on the street to fucking god himself.
Even if these rumors are just that - rumors; I do hope that Microsoft and Sony's next generation offering don't go always online.
The best times with the Xbox 360 were every friday night, gather a bunch of friends, bring two Xboxs, system link them together and have great fun playing Call of Duty and Halo. If we can't do that with the next generation, then why bother.
Wow it's like if an HTPC sucked dick
maybe the PS4 will be good?
Wow it's like if an HTPC sucked dick
maybe the PS4 will be good?
It almost certainly would not be any different.
Gamestop's stocks have already taken a hit from the rumors, actually.
Which just shows the danger potential with perpetuating baseless rumors like this.
I doubt this would happen
either way I only play PC games so eh
