Freedom of speech is glorious because not only does it allow someone to say "God hates you because you're a faggot," it allows you to look them straight in the eye and call them an inbred hillbilly, and to remind them to cuddle their sister after they have sex tonight. I've always advocated against violence towards religious extremists, it makes them into martyrs. Granted, the WBC becoming martyrs isn't going to suddenly pull anyone to their cause, but the point still stands. The idea of turning their practices against them will, I believe, work to end them. All the public has to do is wait for a member of the Westboro Baptist Church to die, even if its a child, and show up at the funeral with signs like "God hates faux Christians" and "Thank God for [insert cause of death]." People like the members of the Westboro Baptist Church are able to do what they do because they dehumanize those who they oppress, and having them learn first hand what it's like to be the family at the funeral while people picket about how the deceased party deserved to die because of something someone else did. I'm not saying they would immediately stop, but I have no doubt that it would be a very enlightening experience, and may eventually result in the Phelps family being destroyed from the inside out, as happens to a large number of families after a member passes away. Faith in God can only take you so far.
