Something about children were supposed to call a number for some holiday related event, but due to an error in the number they were calling NORAD (or, rather, the precursor to it.)

Instead of being asses, they went along with it and said they were tracking Santa as they spoke to the kids.

Because the millions of children that grew up believing in Santa grew up to be mentally damaged individuals who can't grasp reality or fantasy once they found out Santa doesn't exist.
