Remember that the men and women that do the dirty work of the military are young people at the start of their llives and most of them want to do whatever they can to help others and the country as a whole. The idea of a bunch of evil commander s getting together to plan a coup is a little farfetched. Because the people recieving the orders would have objections to it.
"objections" unless they point gun at you
I think that's funny about the military. There seems to be the whole checks and balances against the federal government as if it can't be trusted, eg one of the original intentions of the second amendment so that the government wouldn't go authoritarian, however it's the military that should be most-deeply distrusted. Many coups and revolutions, even in very recent history such as Egypt and Thailand, are done by the military acting independently of the elected government. I'd put more trust in elected officials rather than the most powerful military force in the world.
The U.S. military is 100% volunteer and promotions are based mostly on a meritocracy. Sure, there is some politicing once you get up to the general ranks, but for the most part, leaders are there because they were good enough at their jobs to get recognized, are charismatic enough to lead, and joined in the first place because they were at least patriotic enough to decide to defend the country.
The military is't perfect, but generally speaking, it's one of the few national institutions where you can really rise through the ranks regardless of your racial and economic backgrounds. There is a ceiling without a college degree, sure, but there are paths to take to go from enlisted out of a rural high school to general in charge of international operations.

Don't forget Egypt and Thailand. Or even the Civil War where many young Americans decided to go against the union.

no they wouldnt. its easy to justify something as "serving your country" when you scored low enough on the asvab to land yourseld in infantrt. theyre not intellectual patriots, theyre yes men. the exact kind of peoe we should be worried about turning america into some dictatorship are the exact people whose rhetoric is about doing exactly that. i.e:" we need to pass the patriot act to defend our freedom."
When you conduct a survey of Supreme Court favorability shortly after they make a ruling that many American's find unfavorable, it stands to reason at that time, the Supreme Court will not be viewed very favorably.
