Democracy kind of becomes a bit pointless if it doesn't protect against oppression.
Yeah it's not perfect by any means, but it beats the alternatives.
If I saw the headline "erdogan shot down by coup f16s" I would fucking cheer loud as fuck
He supports the democratic process, not Erdogan. He may be a snake but Erdogan was elected by the people, and a military coup is a direct affront to democracy.
But Erdogan doesn't support democracy, and after this he'll likely be "President For Life". A Counter-Terrorism expert on the news made the claim that he had arrested 2000 people for the crime of insulting him, suppressed opposition to him, and that he was essentially a dictator becoming more authoritarian by the day. How can you support a man that does not believe in democracy, and call that supporting democracy?
So.. is it actually over?
I am doubtful, it seems like there is quite a bit of misinformation being distributed. For example, one of the pro-Edrogan outlets tweeted an image of a anti-coup protest attended by hundreds. Problem was that this picture was from a protest 3 years earlier.
Yeah it's not perfect by any means, but it beats the alternatives.
Not really, if it doesn't protect against oppression then it's not serving its purpose. At that point you might as well try alternatives. Being elected should never give someone the right to act like a dictator.

Why is the army using Leopard 1s? I thought turkey had more modern equipment.
"WE CAN CONFIRM THAT COOP IS NOW OVER" *F-16 dive bombs in the background* "DONT MIND THAT, THERES NOTHING TO BE CONCERNED ABOUT"
Why is the army using Leopard 1s? I thought turkey had more modern equipment.
They've got a mix of Leopard 1's, 2's and modernised Pattons.
I wonder what Erdrogan's relation with Germany will be if he comes out on top, since he got denied asylum and all that.
Sure....

It's funny how every time they say that something big explodes two minutes later
It's like they don't know social media and livestreams exist.
video of a tank running into a crowd NSFW https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Ny-OCiQ9fo
Jesus fuck, the guy at 1:09 was literally doing the tank man photo thing, and got straight up mowed down. What the fuck...
Someone just fired 5 bullets at the apartment that I live in. And the parliament is being continuesly shelled.
The news is reporting that Obama has previously denounced Erdogan and called him a dictator, weird that he's now giving him vocal support. Also
Jeezus, is this the reason for the coup? To get him out of office? Does his removal and/or staying power have any effects globally? Hope AhoyMate is okay.
But Erdogan doesn't support democracy, and after this he'll likely be "President For Life". Wanna know why every state around the world is denouncing the coup and are supportive of the current leader of Turkey. Because they realize its stability. At least stability in the form of a wildcard. But any coup could change that and that's bad since there can be high risks with no control measures in place.
Someone just fired 5 bullets at the apartment that I live in.
get as far away from the windows as you can
Why the fuck would Erdogan go airborne knowing that Coop forces have access to their F-16s
If it was in their interest to kill Erdogan, this coup would have looked a lot different.
Someone just fired 5 bullets at the apartment that I live in. And the parliament is being continuesly shelled.
Get away from the windows, and take cover
Someone just fired 5 bullets at the apartment that I live in. And the parliament is being continuesly shelled.
move from the windows and get to the safety
So.. is it actually over?
everything has only just begun
Skyping with my ex from Turkey. It's horrifying.
get as far away from the windows as you can
in fact i would recommend getting to an interior room and putting up stuff against the wall closest to the exterior to give as much protection as possible
I think the coup is just in "bringing you all to hell with us" mode right now, still baffled as to why the jets aren't going after Erdogan's jet though
https://www.flightradar24.com/THY8456/a5a3952 So the plane is just circling around just in case they need to pick up Erdogan or what?
Jesus fuck, the guy at 1:09 was literally doing the tank man photo thing, and got straight up mowed down. What the fuck...
It kind of helps to highlight how monumental acts of protest like Tank Man really are when you see what could actually happen to those types of protesters. The pic of the guy laying his head right under the tracks of the tank made my jaw drop, the guy is 100% at the mercy of the tank and by the time he hears the engine roaring it'd be too late to move. It's pretty incredible seeing the determination and passion of some protesters.
It's no one business if the gov is bad and if the president is a dick. If people choose the president, he should run all his mandate
I still don't understand why nobody has shot down erdogan's plane I can see trying to capture him, but it seems like they should cut their losses ASAP
Because this isn't about the 'man', its about the election system which he won fair and square and interrupting it with detaining him/killing him would be the very thing the United States would not want to do.
I see, as long as you were democratically elected once, you can do whatever the fuck you want and you'll always have support from those who call themselves pro-democracy.
