Holy shit police are fighting the military... What the fuck is going on?!
I'd really doubt that. The military is required by the Turkish constitution to overthrow the government if they stray too far from secularism.
Maybe we will see a nicer Turkey then.
Can someone give me super quick rundown of what's happening, why is it happening, who are the sides and if 2016 will stop trying to set the upside down as the new standard?
military is trying to overthrow the Prime Minister of Turkey. I don't think anybody except the military knows what is fully going on

Well, I guess this just turned violent Hopefully there will be minimal or no loss of life, but I get the feeling thats wishful thinking
"The Turks are ready to enter into the European Union, just you wait, guys!"
If this is to overthrow Erdogan and is gang of Islamists, they'll probably be more ready to enter the EU after this.
Police isn't going to win a fight against tanks and aircraft
My friend in Turkey is saying that every single police in Turkey have been called in for duty.
I guess we can expect more casualties then, looks like civil war
"The Turks are ready to enter into the European Union, just you wait, guys!"
"This visa deal isn't totally going to backfire like punting open all of our outer borders last year, guys, just trust our bureaucrats in Brussels!"
More fire from helicopters:
I can only hope that the result of this will be a Turkey closer to the secular state that it was created to be.
The army might be acting in support of Gulen.
Erdogan is apparently in Mongolia right now, so I guess they choose their moment. Edit: Other source saying he's somewhere in the south of Turkey. At least he's not near the capital.
If it were Gulen wouldn't this mean some western backing? Maybe we're fed up with their backdoor deals with ISIS
Erdogan is apparently in Mongolia right now, so I guess they choose their moment.
looks like he might be exiled for life
More fire from helicopters:
Which city is this? I've got a friend in Istanbul and I'm getting kinda worried about the guy.
2016 is going places.
Okay so but are the military the good guys or the bad guys here [editline]---[/editline] so people stop lecturing me on it: this is a snark, of course there's no objective good or bad here
Holy shit police are fighting the military... What the fuck is going on?!
My Turkish friend at Istanbul says the same, they're just underneath his apartment shooting.
Which city is this? I've got a friend in Istanbul and I'm getting kinda worried about the guy.
Ankara.
Rumors from the BBC are that the top army leadership in Ankara have been taken hostage. Whoever is leading the coup, it's not the senior military leadership.
If it were Gulen wouldn't this mean some western backing? Maybe we're fed up with their backdoor deals with ISIS
This has Clinton written all over it!
I don't understand it, doesn't Turkey have a prime minister? Isn't it the PM that runs the country, instead of the president?
this is some arma 3 level shit right here, these past couple of days have been dreadful.
Okay so but are the military the good guys or the bad guys here
there is no such thing in w a r
2016 is an unbelievable year.
Okay so but are the military the good guys or the bad guys here
We don't know yet. We're just going to have to wait until it's all over, Could be tomorrow, could be years like Syria
Okay so but are the military the good guys or the bad guys here
History and politics is not that simple as good and evil
I don't get why so many people are surprised, Turkey goes through a coup like every two decades or so it's almost an integral part of their culture at this point.
If this Gulen person is behind it, is it a good thing or a bad thing? From what I've read it seems like it could be a good thing, but I'm probably missing something.
I'm don't know about anyone else but I'm getting vibes of the Soviet Coup in 1991. Hopefully history is on our side here.
We don't know yet. We're just going to have to wait until it's all over, Could be tomorrow, could be years like Syria
I wouldn't bet on a long conflict. Realistically how are police equiped in any way to stand against the Military? If the entirety of the military is acting as a single unit I don't see how Erdogan will remain in power. Although if the hostage reports are true then I do wonder who is leading the military if not the senior military officials.
