I sure hope this ends with a friendlier Turkey, if that happens I will be happy to have Turks in NATO
I don't get why so many people are surprised, Turkey goes through a coup like every two decades or so it's almost an integral part of their culture at this point.
Well, maybe because most people here were way too young to really know about the past coups and it is a lot different in this day and age with the internet, watching the whole thing almost live.
If this has been a successful coup, the future of Turkey might go into two paths: an oppressive military dictatorship, or a government reformed to be more secular sans Erdogan. Hopefully the latter without a lot of bloodshed. For any FP users in Turkey, stay safe please.
"Earlier today there were police everywhere. I thought that was normal but the two Turkish girls I was with told me it wasn't normal. We were walking around the centre of Istanbul, at the Grand Bazaar there were police at every entrance and exit with lots of guns. "A police helicopter was flying very low at sunset, it was about 8pm. It looked like it was searching for something. Later on, at about 10.30 I was in Karakoy, a bar area in the city centre and everyone started looking at their phones. A man who owns the bar told us that the army are taking over everything. "Then we walked down towards the a quieter area by the sea. While we were walking, my friend said the army had closed brides across the Bosphorus. We could see army helicopters in the sky. "We went inside a cafe and everyone was on their phones looking worried, texting. Lots of people were running to catch a ferry - because the bridges were shutting and people wanted to get home. Then policemen came out of the ferries on their walkie talkies, looking very alert."
source: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2016/07/15/turkey-low-flying-jets-and-gunfire-heard-in-ankara1/ People knew something was up, by the sounds of it.
May I qualify as a refugee?
If there is an extended conflict I would say definitely apply. Regardless of the outcome, my thoughts are with all FPers from Turkey
please kill that old fart Erdogan
I have a flight back to Turkey 4 days later. Should I stay here? I sincerely don't know.
Unless you want to help either side, stay so you don't get ventilated I may not usually like you postings but please don't die mate
Jesus, stay safe out there Turkish FPers.
My aunt's children are in Turkey right now. They're staying further away from Istanbul, but they say they're not allowed to go outside.

That said, this could be a shitshow whatever way you look at it.
please kill that old fart Erdogan
i don't think he's in Turkey, at least not places like Istanbul. Unless the military sent an assassin after/with him, he's not gonna be dead soon.
I wouldn't bet on a long conflict. Realistically how are police equiped in any way to stand against the Military? If the entirety of the military is acting as a single unit I don't see how Erdogan will remain in power. Although if the hostage reports are true then I do wonder who is leading the military if not the senior military officials.
That's assuming it's the entire military behind this. We don't know how much of the military is behind this or people will even fight back against them. It's just way too chaotic and it doesn't make sense for the police to be fighting the military, at least in the US, they would be on an almost even playing field
If this Gulen person is behind it, is it a good thing or a bad thing? From what I've read it seems like it could be a good thing, but I'm probably missing something.
Atleast it's an opportunity for change which a large portion of the Turkish citizens want. Even though this could lead to a major risk of civilian lives, harsh development is a must in their positions. But I thought Gulen lost all his power?
Nah if the military succeeds hes going to form a government in exile and we will still hear about him forever
They say that he is in a small town in the Turkish coast called Bodrum. https://twitter.com/noahbarkin/status/754053240799555584
If this is Gulen versus Erdogan then im rooting for Erdogan. Nothing good can come from the old sick fuck Gulen [editline]asd[/editline] this is so fucked up. how did this all happen
My friend can only use Steam now (Istanbul).

oh man, this is exciting
Well this is unpleasant

So. Is it time for World War III yet?

Gulen is basically a saint compared to Erdogan So far whats going on, the Turkish military has said they initiated the coup to preserve democracy and human rights.
Reminder that if you have friends in Turkey who are experiencing Internet censorship right now...
My friend can only use Steam now (Istanbul).
What a peculiar year it is.
So. Is it time for World War III yet?
Don't sound so excited.
I hope they arrest Erdogan his minions and put whoever they want as a dictator.
