To expand a bit more than other have, it's looking like the most of the navy, most of the airforce and some of the land forces of the military attempted to take control of Ankara and Istanbul in a coup. It's unknown whether the coup was initiated by the Top Brass of the military, but it's looking like it wasn't. Currently it appears the forces in Istanbul are failing, namely due to a substantial amount of popular support for Erdogan in that area, but Ankara is still unknown. As for Erdogan, he did an interview with CNN Turk using FaceTime calling for people to rise up against this coup, and later was flown into Istanbul at an airport controlled by pro-coup forces but was able to go on just fine. Leader of opposition parties to Erdogan have condemned the coup, and the world at large seems to as well. For now, it seems the coup forces are attempting to kill Erdogan using airstrikes, and have bombed the shit out of the Turkish main assembly building.

A lot of people in this thread aren't aware that he was democratically elected.

he rigs elections, slowly turns a secular state into an islamic state and jails journalists that even mildly critisize him. Even if they're in another country.
What else could you call that?
He's not supported by all of the people, but he seems to have a lot of fanatical supporters.
I don't think most presidents or prime ministers anywhere are supported by all of the people. Not everyone can get over 100% of the vote like Putin can.
EMTS are stuck on the bridge. They are stating that police are engaging turkish troops.

Link to stream?
Now that's some interesting news to wake up to...
I wonder what caspianreport is going to think of this.
In my opinion, even when all of the media is saying the coup is over, I doubt it because of the fact their government agencies probably trying to enforce a media blackout.

Honestly don't know this - is there certain evidence he rigged election or is just the generic crying of the opposition that happens in every election?

hes on bridge currently
The Turkish army have been the protectors of the Turkish state and it's secularism ever since Ataturk made the modern institutions of Turkey.
All the Turkish coups since now were always cause the army didn't approve of the governments becoming extremists so they replaced them. They always brought back democracy and didn't cling to power.
If Erdogan wins, then that will be very bad news for Turkey. He will have absolute power and continue turning Turkey to Islam.
bunch of shots came into their direction. I think several people got hit.
also, rumor of istanbul strait being closed.
What is this bridge and why is it important?

What else could you call that?
Rigging elections and polls reliably for over a decade, filling meetings with millions of people where other parties can't gather even a couple thousand people sounds really sketchy right? How dare that many people can even think about liking him?
Oh I didn't know allowing women to wear headscarfs and burqas was turning a secular state (Implying secularism wasn't shoved down people's throats by the tyrant that is called Ataturk in the first place) into an islamic one.
Also if Erdoğan was throwing journalists who even mildly criticise him in jail constantly, trust me there would be no journalists left in the damn country. You have no idea how much shit the guy gets from secular medias on a daily basis.
Give me a fucking break.
What is this bridge and why is it important?
I think this was one of the two bridges that were blocked by the army when all of this started. A bunch of people are stuck right now.
Bridge just got opened it looks like, lots of gunfire of presumably people celebrating
edit: there is a shit ton of gunfire
I hear a of gun shots on that bridge stream

just because he's not jailing everyone doesn't mean he isn't jailing some, or that it's less important that only a few have been jailed. freedom of press should be an absolute right.
The idea of a benevolent trusting Junta just seems incredibly naive, a lot of people died and disappeared in the last few and typically only candidates they approved could run for office.
I mean the military is shooting protestors on the street, why exactly are people so in favor of this?
Following twitter, seems some of the coup forces F-16's are still bombing Ankara, or are still active in the area.
Hours and several hundred posts later and the thread is still "shooting on the bridge"
How many times has the coup failed?
Wait so what's the current status, it's hard to gauge from what I'm reading.
bridge stream cut out.
Just lost the bridge stream. Can't tell if the guy ended it or if he lost connection.
What's the significance of the bridge everyone is talking about?
I don't understand why the USA official statement must be against the coup. Isn't the entire point of the 2nd amendment to ensure that coups CAN occur when needed? The US government should've held off picking a side in my opinion until a choice can be made that best suits international interests (i.e, a side "wins").
The statement is because of who the President is and also NATO commitments. While NATO won't directly involve itself in the internal affairs of Turkey, it is a requirement for the government to be democratic, technically. I would imagine that NATO would continue to protect Turkey from external attacks.
As far as the 2nd Amendment, your talking about a President who is very much against it. Yes, the point of the 2nd Amendment is so that a coup could happen against the government, but not from the military, since they'd have weapons anyway. The 2nd Amendment is so that the citizens of the US could overthrow the government. Military coups do have a history of installing dictators.
Its also so that if the military were to attempt a coup, the citizens could rise against the military if they so choose to as well. The 2nd Amendment is all about giving the citizens the option to resist, it does not necessitate that they do so.
This is breaking news.
Soldiers with tanks on the bridge just surrendered altogether.
Also to my knowledge there isn't a signifigance to the bridge, they just responded really violently compared to other groups. They killed and injured at least 15 people.

They have no idea what is about to happen to them.
