actually it's the only reason cnn writes any articles. they are about sensationalism and perpetuating a materialistic culture because they can get eyes on screen with it. they don't really care about journalism, just making money. this article and the piers morgan show have been pretty good examples of that.
cnn doesn't care about promoting materialism they care about promoting themselves, which would be fine if they promoted themselves with quality journalism but they took the "be accessible to literally everyone" route instead

And I still feel like I have the willpower to change what I want in my life
But not theirs. Knowing about the plight in <insert civil-war-torn shithole here> does absolutely fuck all to help the people in said shithole, and unless you've got a 7 figure bank account you don't have the resources to help them anyway.
which is why other people shouldn't make excuses and feel like they can't change anything in their life.
Which is true, and I never argued against.
What I'm arguing against is the point of bothering to sift through the media bullshit for events going on half a world away that don't affect you in any way and that you are powerless to influence in either way.
And who says I won't ever visit these countries at some point in my life? I plan on travelling the world at some point, and I'd like to know the situation about what's going on and other stuff to make sure I know what to expect from a certain area.
The situations in those places change so often that there's no point in trying to gain that insight by following the news. Research it a couple months before you plan on going.
So for people to care about Africa they just need more giant monuments for Americans to visit?

that's what i'm saying. if you got the impression that i believe in a large conspiracy to consciously promote materialism or consumerism then maybe i worded what i said wrong. what i'm saying is that our systems are organized in a way that gives incentive to cnn to be a shitty news channel. it isn't people are trying to promote a certain cultural attitude necessarily, although that probably happens to some degree, it's that everyone plays a hand in perpetuating the cultural attitude without even really realizing it.

and then cnn is allowed to get away with shitty journalism because we have created and sustained a culture that finds behavior like that which is found on cnn to be acceptable as news.
