Because Americans hold civil liberties more important than their financial well-being. Such issues should not even be in debate, they violate the constitution, but sadly, they are.

States' rights is a core concept of the United States. No one wanted consolidated central power, all the power is supposed to be with the people and states.
However, the southerners, by tying states' rights to slavery, ruined that forever. Now everyone expects the Feds to be the final authority. Oh well.

And he believes that marriage can only be between a man and a woman, and I don't see why he'd support the Defense of Marriage act if he thought that people should [I]really[/I] be able to choose, as his "I let everyone make a decision!!!!1!" ideals would imply.
