Xbox One created 'with advertising in mind', advertisers to get limited access to Kinect features

The only difference is that the advertisement we have is quite small and not disruptive, so people are not aware of clicking on the banners because they know this is a part of the whole experience on the dash,” the senior digital art director revealed. “So the users know that this is something that when they click on it, they won’t be hit by something crazy or something dangerous like on the web. Everything that lands there, we create."
Part of the experience huh? Not aware I'm clicking on a banner? I didn't realize I pay 500$ plus 50$ a month so I can experience MS designed ads. This is just a money grab for them at this point. Sonys services have functioned just as well over the years even when it was free. There is no other explanation for the ads other then greed on their part.
Eh, ads are fine, it's not like you need to pay for Xbox live!
oh, wait, you do.

there are ads on psn even if you have ps+
All for PlayStation or Sony related services/products.
none of that mountain dew or doritos crap

thank god it wasn't centered around advertising

Where? You mean on the store page? The ticker is about demos and new releases.
Okay yea I'm not getting the Xbone at all anymore. I'm tired of advertisements being shoved in my face on products I've paid for.

I think he means the "what's new" tab the opens up on boot but only shows ads if you wait like ten seconds on the tab for them to load.

That's advertising. How is that not advertising?
This is something interesting I doubt any of you even read.
They're going to try to incorporate ads in a way where they won't be intrusive to the player, and will be relevant and not jarring. So kinda like ads on Google, I'm guessing. I'd rather have a "BUY THE THING HERE" on the side of my browser while I'm searching for things than a video ad that I have to actually manually close out of like on Youtube.
This, too.
So we're not going to be seeing Facebook-tier ads that say "YOU CAN MAKE A MILLION DOLLARS PLAYING GAMES! CLICK HERE!!!!" And this!
Strange that I'm one of the only people to actually mention the context and justification behind what Microsoft's trying to pull. It's as if half of you only read the part of the article that the OP bolded!
It's a good plan and they sound like good advertisements but it's a $500 console with a $5 monthly fee for online capabilities and $60 games, I don't think they should need advertisements at all
Advertisements are understandable for things like facebook (who provide image hosting, networking, IM, etc for nothing) and air or cable TV (the actual channels get like nothing of what you pay to the cable provider) but not for a platform like that. If they can't support their online functionality with a monthly fee and an upfront cost that's $100 more than the competitor why are they even trying?
That's advertising. How is that not advertising?
On a store page? How could you not advertise? A logo for a game would be considered an advertisement. It's a store.

Honestly I've never even seen that.

Also, "listening to you?" Was this in the article or what?
What does limited access to Kinect features mean?
That's advertising. How is that not advertising?
Show me an online shop that doesn't have advertising.
We mean Advertising as in ads in the system menu. The Wii system menu is mostly without ads (except for the shop channel thumbnail), the PS3 system menu is mostly without ads (the Whats New and Ticker), the xbox 360 system menu has ads fucking everywhere.

Wii or Wii U?
Because I've never seen an ad on the Wii U.

The article says nothing about monitoring users. The PR guy said that the Kinect could be used in tandem with advertising, but didn't go into details at all. So it's a mystery. "limited access to the kinect" was only mentioned in the article's title, nowhere else.

I don't understand how a shop would not advertise. You're going there to shop. The text names of the content could be considered advertisements. The banners and screenshots are definitely advertisements, videos? Demos? Yeah.
Advertising is to be expected, but what is it going to do with the kinnect. I mean the idea of video feed being sent to companies isn't a fun idea. What's next for the xbone, is it going to monitor the time of day and how long you play and try to be a nanny and be like, "ok it's 9PM you've played for an hour time to go to sleep."
Wii or Wii U?
Because I've never seen an ad on the Wii U.
The original Wii. On the Wii U you have the plaza on the TV display which will show Miiverse communities of games you may not own, which would be debatable if it's advertising or not.

I wouldn't say the Miiverse communities are ads since they're basically just forums for a game.
I wouldn't say the Miiverse communities are ads since they're basically just forums for a game.
Hence it being debatable. If one did count them as ads I would see them as minor, as it's just the game icons on the upper screen and nothing else.
I personally don't think it's advertising, but I can see why someone could.

Okay so let's think about this for a second, either it's going to be watching your living room detecting products you have/do not have, or it's going to be listening to what you're saying. Those are the two functions of the Kinect.
It's obvious you're just trying to fight.
"Where did it say it was listening? Read the article" Well it does talk about the Kinect... "NOT GOOD ENOUGH THEY DIDN'T EXPLICITLY SAY THAT"
"there are ads on psn even if you have ps+" Well I guess the store does since you know, it's a store" "YEAH THATS ADVERTISING"
Whatever dude.
On Xbox, the ad is part of the actual experience, it’s not something that is outside.
Don't worry you have Halo, Gears of War and Forza sequels, and the long awaited Kinect Sports sequel (that RARE is too busy developing instead of working on Killer Instinct 3 themselves).
Spank the monkey to win a prize!
