• Notch bought a house.

After the first million, homes are really diminishing returns unless you get into the hundreds of millions and you build some sort of palace. You can get one of these for like $500,000 This one is $400,000
The house has that empty shell vibe because it was built on spec, that is a developer has it made to see how much they could get for it. This is not a 'home' being sold from one home owner to another. Think of it more like a custom car shop building their ultimate hotrod then selling it to the highest bidder. It won't look something a car guy built to drive around, it'll look like a show car.

It's not like Notch is rich and can't do a restyling.

Fuck. I can't imagen what kind of stuff you could do with like 1 billion dollars. Holy shit that's alot of money to live on
Notch is probably going to single for a long, long time so living there is going to be depressing
Wait, I thought notch got married?
You would think if you had that much cash and creativity as a person you like to just hire a architect to design your own dream home. Not buy some pre-finished mansion that the owning company obviously tried waaaaay too hard to make it look expensive. [editline]18th December 2014[/editline]
Wait, I thought notch got married?
Yah, it didn't last long. [sp]She wasn't very good at gold digging.[/sp]
He isn't handling his money very well. It's a nice looking house, but 70 million? I get that he has like billions but he should still try and manage his money.
Wait, I thought notch got married?
His ex-wife married him again after Minecraft got popular and then dumped him not too long after.
Wait, I thought notch got married?
They divorced a couple years(?) ago.
If I were rich, I'd still buy a regular ol' home, just in a better neighbourhood. Bill Gates is one of, if not the, richest person in the world and he just wears cheap T-shirts and trousers. Notch got all this stuff from a game, and he's gona bit power mad with it, I'd say. Person like him oughta look for a more humble place to settle down, lest he feels like he can shit out another cash cow.
what does garry live in?
ITT: Personal finance advisers. He has tons of money, why can't he spend it on whatever he wants? (User was banned for this post ("ITT" - Craptasket))
what does garry live in?
A box behind Facepunch Studios ( That has remote controlled sunblinds! )
ITT: Personal finance advisers. He has tons of money, why can't he spend it on whatever he wants?
It's not like we can personally go up and say to him, "This is a waste of money." or whatever. If people in the thread think he overpayed, they can think that. We aren't berating him for spending that much, some of us just think he spent a bit too much. He's happy with it, though, so I don't really care.
He isn't handling his money very well. It's a nice looking house, but 70 million? I get that he has like billions but he should still try and manage his money.
When you're a billionaire, you don't just have a billion sitting around. that's stupid because the value of your billion might change. You take that billion, you buy the best accountant ever, and you put all that money is a bunch of investments with x% return, so that your 1 billion becomes a 1.5 billion, and so on. Even if notch wasn't looking to invest and make MORE money, you can bet your ass he has an accountant who is at least managing the money to pretty much never go away (i.e: keep notch a billionaire for life)
i can dig the design of the house, but i feel like that style looks better in a smaller space.
what does garry live in?
From what I've seen a normal house, probably not that far from his family. I doubt he's do anything like this considering he doesn't care about about people's opinions and he's settled happily so he doesn't need to show off, also he seems to get on with his family quite well so maybe he wants to be relatively close by? I dunno who cares.
ITT: Personal finance advisers. I can't really see Notch living there, but it's his money as you said.

Buying a fancy house isn't power mad, it's just spending his money.
i could never live in a house like that because you'd need maids and other employees to keep your home clean and to refill the candy, it's too weird to have random people in your home every day for hours.
dude think about the awesomeness if it, you'd be complete with castle /AND/ people to guide.
i guess being an indie dev has its perks
i guess being an indie dev has its perks
More like being a famous indie dev has its perks
Notch is probably going to single for a long, long time so living there is going to be depressing
See, I don't understand this kind of post. Is it supposed to "balance out" the envy of him being able to own a $70m estate because he's "lonely" and "single"? He made a game, got fortune's favor thrown his way, and now he's rich. Good for him, the world's like that sometimes. Who are you to judge how much happiness someone else has just because of their choices? People can be happy being single or married, rich or poor.
what an asshole
Honestly? A place like that would intimidate me. I'm not a fan of big houses. Too many rooms. You can't be sure what's going on in all of them. Means you have to hire help. Which means you have a constant flow of money going out. Increased risk of someone robbing you. Unless it's like an abandoned missile silo or something. That would be cool.
He deserves it. He made a (mostly) original idea that people love. I may not agree with the outrageous spending, (Could end up spending it all and becoming bankrupt) but it's not my money. His ex-wife must feel like shit seeing him with all this money. I hope Notch will realize that there's going to be a lot of gold diggers. His wife will probably come back as one of them, too. Now, if only the 30 million other indie companies would realize that the blocky style game has been sucked dry and would move to some other style.
I'm jealous he has the cash to do this, not of the house itself. I'd sperg right out and build something like the adventure time treehouse. That place looks cozy as fuq.
