If I was rich I'd make a replica of the 25 square metre house in IKEA
This is why we can't have nice things. Bad coders get the high life, whereas good coders have to live down in the gutter. Damn you, Notch. You win this round.
If I had that much money I would convert an oil tanker to a self sufficient floating base and live in the antarctic, far away from the assholes of the world. Also its fucking amazing, I used to IRC with that guy back when Minecraft was a tiny tech demo and when his blog was actually relevant to minecraft players.
Here's a video I saw of it a few weeks ago. Looks good
id rather have a cozy home or apartment, and put the money towards something else. or maybe notch always aspired to be the son of an oil sheik, idk
That would be a bitch to clean up
fuck with 70 million dollars I'd hire a dozen mason companies to build me a castle complete with dungeons and a moat. Or yeah go for a wooden/stone pacific lodge style house in the middle of nowhere near the coast.
Why didn't he build a Minecraft style house? He bought a lame GTA V luxury house that looks like everyone else's house. Be proud of what got you here and give an architect a cool project to make a modern home with Minecraft influences, now THAT would be cool.
For some reason, I always considered Notch a humble guy in pretty much every aspect. Guess that doesn't apply to housing :v:
How much is Notch even making a year, and how much will he continue to make?
He got a couple of billion dollars for Minecraft. Let's say after sharing some of it with partners and paying taxes he only has a third of that now, he still has enough to live like a king just off the interest his investments generate. People like that don't 'make' money such as salary or wages. That kind of wealth just reaches critical mass and perpetuates itself. This assumes he doesn't do anything totally insane with his wealth. One 70 million dollar house, meh, no big deal. Two or three, maybe something in NYC and London? Still no big deal. If he starts piling up expensive real estate on every continent around the world, then we'll know he went off the deep end.
What if they just make him a 6x6 dirt hut, like everybodies first minecraft house
My first Minecraft house was a hobbit burrow on a beach in Minecraft Alpha.

Though if it was tastefully done, I could see it.
If I was that rich I'd buy a comfy house with a wood and stone aesthetic, this all looks way too sterile and bland for my taste. I'd honestly feel depressed having to walk through those huge mostly empty rooms. To each his own I guess.
Pretty ugly IMO. It's a house, but it's no home.
Pretty ugly IMO. It's a house, but it's no home.
He just moved in, of course it's not going to have personality. If he likes it and thinks he can get used to how big it is, good on him. I'd much rather settle on a smaller house personally.
I doubt he's going to spend much time at home, in that home or any other. With that kind of money to spend you can always find something to do, somewhere to go, when you won't see your home for weeks if not months at a time. That's assuming he plans to 'live' here in LA. For all we know this is just his home away from home for when he feels like hanging out here on the west coast. edit: One other crazy idea- with the money he has now, he can be a player in the movie business. This house puts him right in the middle of all the Hollywood action. Maybe being a movie producer now is his plan? He'd have his pick of tons of desperate young women, who would do anything to be in the movies. Not that I advocate taking advantage of something like that, just that if I had the money I'd do it.
Ah, a fool and his money.
Are you seriously telling me that you would not live in that house if someone approached you right now and it was within your means? It can always be renovated if for whatever reason,
If I had billions to spend, and was actually willing to pour money into a house for renovation I would work on something interesting. Like, oh I don't know, how about a fucking castle? If that was brought up to modern standards of living I'd totally live in that. With billions in the bank it's not like I ever need to worry about being so far removed from society anyway.
What's the latest on that house garry was building anyway? Haven't heard about it for like a year
He cancelled it.
I wouldn't be able to live in such a house, I would be too afraid to touch anything. Why do you need all the luxury anyway? What drives a person to go "Oh god I won't live throught the day without that onyx table and these designer pictures"? [editline]20th December 2014[/editline] He would play it smart if he spent 70$ buying land and property in various places and getting more cash from rent.

Some ideas sound good, until you realize you'd be in the middle of nowhere. There's nothing wrong with that, if that's how you want to live. But if you look at the location he chose, not the house itself but the location, it's clear he wanted to be in the middle of the action.
My first Minecraft house was a hobbit burrow on a beach in Minecraft Alpha.
I wish I could make Mountain Halls/Hobbit burrows but the hills are never big enough.
Maybe Notch moved to the US so he could hear the anguished wailing coming from Zachtronics.
I personally would love a big house. Though I'm a bit on the paranoid side so living alone in a big house at night will probably not be good for my heart
I personally would love a big house. Though I'm a bit on the paranoid side so living alone in a big house at night will probably not be good for my heart
Hire someone to keep you company?
That house looks so out of place from what I'd expect someone like Notch to live in I mean, the fact that the whole place is plastered with celebrity decor to make you feel like you are surrounded by icons of "cool", and giant lounges good only for filming a reality TV show involving your rap crew hanging out in your giant house. Like, PC gaming nerd who makes indie games on the side gets rich off of one buys such a house. So out of place having all this "hollywood/mainstream music cool guy" decor surrounding you in that context. Unless this whole house is just pre furnished with this stuff and he plans on ripping half of it out to give it a flair that appeals less to the I'm-a-rich-douchebag-cool-guy demographic. [editline]20th December 2014[/editline] On that note I remember when Notch first started making real money, in an interview he was exclaiming that he had a moment where he could go to the grocery store and actually not worry about buying only the cheapest stuff. Now, he's buying $70mil houses like its not a big deal. Oh, how things change. That said, this house probably isn't too expensive to maintain (considering its cost) if he just bought it outright, which he likely did. If we can imagine Notch has $2bil to his name, including what he's saved up from sales of Minecraft and the microsoft buyout, buying this house outright costs him less than 1/20th of his loose cash, and if you think about it, it's a great investment that will likely be worth even more in the future. The cost of living in a house like that afterwards assuming he doesn't just buy a ton of drugs and assuming he settles down would be negligible after that. The value especially goes up if he starts decorating and customizing the house to his liking in a tasteful and eye opening manner. Imagine him doing what he did to the mojang offices to this new place. Dude could live in this house for the rest of his life and basically retire right now, or make money off of investing alone.
I don't think this house is an investment. He got it in a bidding war, he was high bidder. People were bidding on it because it was a brand new showplace home. If/when he sells it that will no longer be the case. There are plenty of wealthy people who've spent a huge amount on houses out there and lost money when they sold them. Just because it's a huge home in Beverly Hills doesn't not guarantee the value will rise. This is the kind of house you buy when you don't give a shit whether it's going to be worth more or not, you are wealthy enough that it doesn't matter.
I'd be depressed there because I'd have no friends to fill up all those bar stools, pool, and chairs.
Pay for bulletproofing, armed guards, and reinforcing of the structure and declare war on a country. This is why I'm not rich.
