I'll buy one and unironically I'll use it as my main phone
Was this phone actually durable or is that just a meme? I have a feeling it isn't considered fragile simply because it didn't have a hinge which was the failure point on clamshells.
It was really, REALLY durable
Dunno why it was, i don't know shit about engineering, but that motherfucker was nearly indestructible
Without hardware upgrades to enable modern network connectivity it'll be pretty useless.
But with slightly upgraded hardware I'd definitely consider getting this.
This is stupid, at least modernize it then.
Modernize as in give it a huge touchscreen that cracks when it falls off a table and give it a shitton of always-on apps so the battery lasts half a day at best?

You sound like you have something against smartphones
[editline]15th February 2017[/editline]
I'd be cool for it to have an microusb plug, I remember being able to make tiny ass """"wallpaper"""" for my Nokia back then which I received over SMS.
We can finally build more armor.
Just relaunch of make a phone with the same philosophy of the Nokia N9 you fucking whore bitches it's almost like you hate money

It outsold both Lumia 800 and 900 even though having no marketing, being launched in Limited markets and internal strategies to make sure it failed
never change, sam
You sound like you have something against smartphones
No, but I can see their faults and why they're not attractive to many people. They actually still design phones with keyboards and monochrome displays exactly because they don't suffer from the problems that smartphones have while still fulfilling their main purpose - making calls and writing text messages. Getting more Nokia 3310 out there makes a lot of sense with that in mind, but making it into a smartphone would completely defeat the purpose.
You have been able to buy "refurbished" (but probably brand new from factory ghost runs) 3310s on AliExpress since forever, they're about $15.
See e.g. here
[editline]blah[/editline]
Or you can buy them in bulk for $13 each.

Kind of a cool thing to be honest, playing on people's nostalgia and bringing good memories back. Hey, I still remember my dad's first cellphone back in the late 90s - it was a super heavy and big motorola with those rubber buttons and a screen not much bigger than that of a regular pager(or even the same). And still back then it looked really cool.
(roughly $62.61)
Fuck off, the original is still for sale at around $15 on websites such as Aliexpress,
This just seems as a way to cash in on a niche nostalgic market, really.
Time to build that nuclear bunker now that they are selling near indestructible bricks again.
Modernize as in give it a huge touchscreen that cracks when it falls off a table and give it a shitton of always-on apps so the battery lasts half a day at best?
Made with current technology like much improved battery, stronger materials, circuitry that consumes less power, etc.
And honestly, many modern phones aren't bad at all. My old HTC desire HD survived 5 years naked without a case, been dropped many times on floor and asphalt, and still looks almost brand new today. The silver letters from the back have fallen off and the plastic on the buttons isn't covered in paint anymore and there's a dent from one bad fall, but the screen and body is in top condition. I now have a Moto g and Xperia z5, which you can throw around the room if you like, nothing will happen to them in many years, too.
I can safely put my account on it that given the lore behind the 3310, there will be youtube videos within 24 hours of the phone coming out showing the phone being otherwise demolished in some ridiculous way.
Techrax probably already has one ordered already
Modernize as in give it a huge touchscreen that cracks when it falls off a table and give it a shitton of always-on apps so the battery lasts half a day at best?
why are you reaching so hard
No, modernize it with a improved materials, battery life, and overall functionality. Obviously we can reach it's same, restricted goals with much better methods and materials now than when it first came out, so no reason not to do that now.
Tbh this would be an excellent emergency phone. Invincible, bare bones, cheap.

So, military-grade?
So, military-grade?
I mean, I guess? If that's the result of perfecting the old design, that it ends up being good for military usage, go for it.
And put a good OS like android on it too
Meego was pretty fucking cool though.
i remember there's a model of that phone called "the kit kat" because it looks like a kitkat bar. just looking at it making me think of that weird fever dream of arabic south park ripoff

I've been considering picking up one of those Sony Ericsson Walkman cell phones just for the nostalgia factor.
And it's always nice to have a backup I guess.

I think it's important to consider old tech to see how far we've come.
This thing came out 11 years ago and now look where we are.

The taliban did use them for IEDs
Still got mine at my parents house yo

And it would actually need to be modernized. A lot of networks are in the process of shutting down their legacy 2G networks, so a straight clone would be a brick within a couple years.
The taliban did use them for IEDs
Kind of a smart thing to do if you think about it. After the bomb goes off you just pick up the phone and use it again.
Is anyone else concerned that the new one's won't be nearly as durable as the originals?
Is anyone else concerned that the new one's won't be nearly as durable as the originals?
The original 3310 (or any phone of that age) wasn't as durable as the memes claim, it's just smartphones of the rising iphone/android era fucking shattered if you dropped them from pocket height
Brother had one and it lasted a long while
My favorite was the 5110

I noticed that one of the reasons the Nokias were so durable is that they would throw all their energy on impact into launching their covers in all directions, thus softening the blow.

My LG Optimus 7 (gen 1 windows phone) did that, it made the phone pretty much indestructible. once had to spend 30 mins searching grass because the battery had a wright brothers moment.
It's legit a shame we live in an era where you are almost expected to have a cover for your phone. the LG Optimus was only 2012 I think (maybe 2011?) Before that I had a Nokia 3120. did the same thing

That was my second phone and it was amazing. The earphones sounded great and you could feel the camera focusing inside of the sturdy bastard. Satisfying.
