• Greece to deport 1,600 illegal immigrants - "We cannot afford an invasion of immigrants"

Considering the current sentiment towards non-Greeks in Greece, I bet some or even most of these so-called 'illegal' immigrants aren't actually going to be illegal.
But one of the advantages of legal immigration for the country is that the state can select how many immigrants will stimulate its economy. Adding huge amounts of poor people to the mix doesn't really help the country, even if they are taxed. So what you are suggesting wouldn't work. If there really is a high demand for cheap work (I honestly don't think that there is right now, a lot of illegal immigrants can't find a job) then it would be beneficial for the state to allow a number of legal immigrants in that matches that demand. As long as their wages are not below the legal limit. Otherwise you'd be encouraging 'legal' sweatshops.
Unless Greece makes it so difficult to setup a business that immigrants simply could not do so, removing illegal immigrants will have very little actual effect on their economy.
Could you please rephrase that? I can't seem to get your point. Are you saying that Greece should make it more difficult to set up illegal businesses with non-taxable employees?

Needs to happen right across europe not just greece. The uk has a very bad illegal migration issue and it's a goddam island. Think what it's like elsewhere.
