well it was also Rommey idea to do this so he is not much better either

this is got to be the worst thing he have's done
where in the article does it say that it was his idea to force the coal workers to be there unpaid? so he wanted them to be there, you can't make speculations like that. also it's like you people don't even read articles anymore. it's clearly the mine owner's fault.
looks like the owner's dug himself into some deep shit
I somehow doubt you ever had to support an entire family while working minimum wage
Same goes for you, really.
my mum supported me while on minimum wage, but that was the UK and they didn't let us starve and i was a baby still. we didn't have money in the bank till my mum finished her studies and got a good job. that's my anecdote i guess.
Sounds like modern day voter intimidation. Force them to act in a specific way and if they don't you punish them in their workplace. A very illegal thing to do. And if they wanted to push it, they could seriously raise hell about it and take their employer to court over this. Which could in turn have repercussions for Romney simply by association, but also if they find out he had some foreknowledge or may have even been remotely responsible for it.
It's not necessarily the GOP that did this. The villain in this story is the bosses who run the mine, not Romney.
Guilt by association. If Romney/Romney's campaign tries to associate with the kind of people who'd stiff their own company's employees out of pay, the negativity heavily reflects back onto Romney and his Campaign. I'd like to say that Barack Obama wouldn't do something like this nor would his campaign, and it's most likely true. Not because of "It happens but it's not reported due to Liberal Bias" but because it literally doesn't happen. Also, being an apologist for the GOP doesn't really get you very far on Facepunch.

TestECull's kids: Daddy why can't we eat this month? TestECull: Because daddy has integrity and stood up to his dictator boss. And now he isn't daddy's boss anymore. Kids: We're hungry though.. TEC: What, my integrity isn't enough for you?
I can relate to the miners being forced to do shit like that. Earlier this year, I kept getting these huge letters from the repubeican national convention (by huge, I mean 4 pages front and back in fine print on A4. These letters were fucking LONG.) Basically they stated I was chosen to be some sort of local representative, along with some bullshit about why democrats and liberals are idiots, and other idiotic rants. If that wasn't enough, it had a pointless survey on a 5th piece of cardstock paper that was basically rigged so it would only have one outcome. It also demanded that it be sent in by some predetermined date and demanded that you sent $250 along with it for "tabulation costs." I ignored the first one and tossed it, but they kept coming and the letters became even longer (the last one was like 8 pages front and back on A4 in fine print.) The longer letters tried to make the crap they tried to force down my throat more urgent and time sensitive, etc. I'm pretty conservative, but everyone in Washington running the country right now are idiots so I'm not sure who to vote for that isn't a child.
Haha, american politics.
My integrity is worth more. I'm not going to be forced into supporting the candidate that's going to set the country back three or four decades, even if that means living off ramen noodles for a month and a half.
nah, what you do is do it, then bring the mine company to court for your pay + punitive damages
A $3500 car is a junker. The maintenance cost and insurance will skyrocket to well above how much the car is worth.
I'm going to disagree. I have a 2002 Chevy Cavalier. Bought it for $3500. It had ~55000 miles on it and I haven't had to do anything to it but replace the brake pads. And that's after an additional ~30000 miles. Other than that I disagree with mr. economics over there.
I fucking hate Romney, I'm just gonna put this out there.

ITS ROMNEY'S FAULT!" I don't even plan to vote for him come November. [editline]29th August 2012[/editline]
How's the fuel economy though?
It's decent enough. Not fantastic like today's best fuel economy cars, but it's better than vehicles that my family has had in the past. So while we could be saving more, we are saving a bit more than we did before.
miners being strong-armed by politicians into wide political matters that they have no real interest or investment in? why does this sound like early 1900s britain? oh yeh because it's america
I think they wouldn't be working as coal miners if they had better opportunities available. I.E. your integrity will turn into inevitable homelessness.
Actually mining is a dangerous job that takes a life to learn and pays a ton, if I recall correctly but yeah if you lose your job your only other chance is finding a job at another coal mine because that's literally the only thing you know how to do
sure, but when we're talking about the smart way to save money buying a cheap car is a bad idea.
Unless its a Lada.
cheap old cars =/= bad idea, sometimes. My 1993 K5 Blazer has almost 245000 miles on it, but it runs great, barely requires upkeep (although i do gotta replace some suspension parts because the previous owner barely took care of it) and gets 18 mpg with cruise control. Sure it leaks but those are inherited with a 20 year old car. [editline]29th August 2012[/editline] and the cost to replace the leaky seals is 50 bucks combined.
I work 40 hours a week (or more) for minimum wage. I make just over 1k/mo. That means I make, give or take, 12k/year. All of my money goes towards bills and rent. All of it. I eat leftover food at work because I don't have enough money to buy food for myself. The only reason I have gas in my car right now is because my girlfriend's mom pays me to drive her back and forth to college. $375/mo for my share of the rent $300/mo car payment $40/mo electricity $20/mo water $40/mo internet $20/mo phone bill $80/mo car insurance $40+/mo gas (until recently, and even then I still sometimes need a quick boost) That leaves me with, if I'm lucky, $85/mo in funds. Or, roughly, $21/week. Even though I hate my job and the people I work for, I can't afford to quit my job and look for something else, because even missing ONE DAY of work (which I had to do last month due to sickness), throws off my entire budget and I'm forced to work overtime to make up for the loss. God forbid I get REALLY sick, or my car breaks down, because then I'd be completely fucked. I have no insurance (not provided by employer, and no money to buy it), and no money to even get a new tire if mine blows. I've never even had a comma in my bank account, much less $15,000 sitting around. I have no idea how you consider that "living paycheck to paycheck", but you obviously don't know what the hell you're talking about. If I wanted to save up that amount of money, it would take me (give or take) 15 GODDAMN YEARS, and that's assuming nothing bad happens in those 15 years. So yeah. Quit acting like you know what it's like to live at/below the poverty line.
real world you so scary
real world you so scary
I always tell kids who bitch about school to enjoy it while they can. The real world is a dark and scary place. I dearly miss high school, where my biggest concern was getting homework done, not whether I would be homeless next month.
real world you so scary
Tack on some college loan bills to that and you'll be in my hell in a couple years.
I'm happy that I live in Denmark - the tax might suck, but damn it's a lot easier to live in Denmark as a student. If I lived on my own (with my current job being a bump above minimum wage), I'd be able to earn $1000 a month if I worked 20 hours a week - though I'd probably choose to work less. Then I'd get about $750 a month from the state, and I wouldn't really need a car, as Copenhagen is very bicycle friendly. The prices may be a bit higher, but I don't think apartments are much above the US price, and otherwise there are some dorms of pretty high quality that you can rent for not too much money. All the time I'd be able to go to university for free and not have to care about being sick or something like that - pretty much only the dentist isn't free here in Denmark. And even then, we're still complaining about Denmark not being good enough for students.
Why didn't they make Romney do some fucking work for once?
I came in the thread to read the news, I stayed in the thread to learn how much America sucks.
i think it'd be sweet if romney had a stroke and we didn't hear about him and his crazy antics for a while
The coal industry here in America is so fucked up. It's good to get out of the foreign energy market, but these companies aren't much better and will do anything to shut down any other competition, even if it is better for the environment.
My grandpa was a coal miner in Kentucky for 30 years. I wonder what he would have to say about this
That's just evil
My grandpa was a coal miner in Kentucky for 30 years. I wonder what he would have to say about this
Mine was as well. He was pretty pissed. If he hadn't been drafted in WW2 I can imagine my family might still be living there.
