Obviously the top deck is off an aircraft carrier model. The hull is confusing though. There are no in-production airship models by any large modeling company at the moment, they've all been discontinued. The only thing I can see is if he got hold of three older revell Hindenburg models, cut the pieces so that he had two ends and one mid section, and glued those together.
Technology is moving fast. I wonder when they will invent the TARDIS.
The Tethered Aerial Release Developed In Style [editline]5th January 2011[/editline] Because hydrogen is lighter (and cheaper, and more abundant) you can afford to put more protection and armouring on the ship and the hydrogen stores. Hydrogen is the future, we just need to work around it.
Sky Captain of Tomorrow.
reading about this makes me a little nostalgic really, Britain used to be at the forefront of aircraft technology from the end of the second world war up till the 1970's. I mean, look at the vulcan bomber, the Hawker hunter and the English electric lightning, (both some of the the stylish planes that existed). I mean, the vulcan took part in test's against the US to see wether (if the russians where using vulcans) they would penetrate its radar defenses. 7 out of 8 vulcans successfully "bombed" their targets and returned back to base unscathed, The hunter would out perform the sabers at higher speeds and altitudes and the lightning can still outturn and out pace many modern fighters today. Then politics got in the way and we sort of lost our way. Heh, those Vulcan bombers were damn sexy: Tip of the hat to the brits.
so, is there a reason why they need to use helium. i understand its lighter than air, but why cant they make a rigid structure with some carbon nano tubes and then create a vacuum in it. super lighter than air ahoy. i am talking out of my ass a bit, i dont know what advances would be required for this.
I doubt any structure able to hold a vacuum would be light enough to do that To make it fly it has to be lighter than air and able to offset the weight of the body
I doubt any structure able to hold a vacuum would be light enough to do that To make it fly it has to be lighter than air and able to offset the weight of the body
well a carbonfiber/nanotube sphere with thin spindly crossbars might work. like a bicycle wheel. there would need to be a pump allowing you to control the purity of the vaccum to rise or fall. that might also be heavy. its an intresting concept
Heh, those Vulcan bombers were damn sexy: Tip of the hat to the brits.
I'm lucky enough to have hears the "vulcan howl" This was the air vibrating in the air intakes to create a "howl". Go to 16 seconds

this looks really cool and future-y and all but it doesn't look like it can go very fast or handle bad weather that well.
I want that

And you'll still end up with a machine with all the drawbacks of the old bulky airships.

Also, its a lot easier to quickly patch up a hole in a pressure filled container (have a gel layer inside that solidifies on contact with oxygen, get a rip gel gets forced out due to pressure seals itself, similar to compressed fuel tanks on jet aircraft), sorry if none of that made much sense, i'm not very good at explaining thing.
turboprops are so 1930s, let's mount some jet engines instead.
um, turboprops are gas turbines, same as jet engines plus they are more efficient to use at lower velocities
"This better not be a blimp" *click* *page loads* "Fuck, it IS a blimp!" Boxes ahoy!
Does it really matter what it looks like? Seriously, this is like a fucking sky hotel, only better because, you know, it flies and shit.
um, turboprops are gas turbines, same as jet engines plus they are more efficient to use at lower velocities
They are jet engines with a propellor attached to the turbines of the jet engine through a series of gears. And yes, they are more efficient al lower velocities. However, they are limited in certain aspects due to the problems of the propellors exceeding the speed of sound and completely changing the dynamics of the air flowing over the blade, thereby limiting their performance at higher speed.
Oooh, a shield helicarrier wouldn't be so bad.

Also fuck yes airships, either heralding the future or dystopian society.
