Oh, you mean that time when Commodore Matthew Perry and the "Black Ships" of the United States Navy forced the opening of Japan to the outside world with the Convention of Kanagawa. Subsequent similar treaties with the Western countries in the Bakumatsu period brought Japan into economic and political crises. Is that the one you're referring to?

That's the beginning of it, yes.

Oh so Japan didn't enact the Meiji Restoration? It was all just a fluke because the kind and gentle Western powers decided to shower them with money for no reason whatsoever?

They didn't do that out of their own will. The west kind of stepped in and said "join us, or you're fucked."

No, Emperor Meiji kind of said "Damn, our shit is weak, I think we better bust a cap in Shogun Tokugawa's ass and clown these Western governments and become a world power because of it."

You're missing the point. They did this as a result of the initial western intervention.

Probably, but they did recognize that our shit was superior and made the smart move. In either case, I seem to recall Bangladesh (under the Mughals) having contact with Western governments and a little western intervention of their own. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Plassey)
What's even worse is that the U.S. abstained. The fuck?
But because the U.S. supports capital punishment, they usually abstain from voting on this resolution, thus they are in a weakened position with one arm tied behind their backs, according to Bromley. “But that said, the State Department did everything possible to beat back the efforts to repeal protections for LGBT persons,” he added.
.

Yeah I recall that one vaguely, but still tl;dr. Japan had more of an epiphany moment after their contact with the west, whereas Bangladesh remained poor.

I don't see how they have their hand tied behind their back. Supporting capital punishment is not an excuse for abstaining on killing gays without cause. An extremely bullshit excuse IMO.

Welcome to third-world countries.

I agree, it's a bullshit excuse, but that's the way they want to do it for some reason.

Why didn't the Bangladeshis have an epiphany? Because they were fucking morons.

Who knows, depends on what happened.
Man fuck you Africa and the Middle East
e: How are countries like Somalia and the DRC even in the UN? There should be a rule that if you can't run your own damn country, you shouldn't have a say in international policies. Get the warlords out of control then we'll talk about it.
In fairness it doesn't really matter for those places as you'll get killed just for being there whether you're gay or not
Welcome to third-world countries.
Uh, America is... First world?
Uh, America is... First world?
Sure.

It's for militaristic countries that still kill innocent people for [insert drunk reason here] so they have to do less paperwork when the person is confirmed gay...
Seriously, where has the world come to...
Who knows, depends on what happened.
Doesn't change the fact that they didn't. Atleast not successfully. Which brings me back to the fucking morons part.

Their society today can't speak for the society in the 1700's...
Sure.

Yes, the US is developed and is therefore first world, it was also aligned with itself during the cold war, and was first world on both occasions.
Wait, what the fuck. South Africa voted for it, yet we are one of the only African countries to allow gay marriage.
Their society today can't speak for the society in the 1700's...
Too bad for them. Because the rest of their history has been a series of defeats, humiliations and failures.

What do you expect from Julius Malema and his ilk? They're the real power of South Africa, not some fucking Rosenbaum screaming herself hoarse about minority rights.

Since when has Julius ever had "real power" apart from some mindless followers of his?
I knew Jamaica has prison terms for gays, but it surprises me that Cuba votes yes, where everyone should be equal except for party members who are a bit more equal.
Since when has Julius ever had "real power" apart from some mindless followers of his?
Julius is just the most egregious example of those spies gooiers. Or how about your glorious president, Jacob "I had a shower" Zuma; "When I was growing up, an ungqingili (a homosexual) would not have stood in front of me. I would knock him out."

Or the fact that america helped rebuild japan from the ground up after most of tokyo and akin where firebombed to the ground. On top of that forcing the country to allocate spending otherwise aimed at Defense research and buildup on science and social progress.
