• Mutations In A Metabolism Gene Could Predispose Some People To Severe Obesity
Ask them to count how many calories they're taking in, seriously, unless they don't follow the rules of thermodynamics or they're some absolute genetic freaks of nature, odds are they're just grossly miscounting. Back when I was a fat fuck I thought the same, go to my skinny friend's house, guy would eat shitload but turns out that over the course of the day I was simply eating more calories than he was even if he was binge eating when I was there. You also have to take in activity level, won't change lots but you might be able to afford a few hundred calories more if you're active.
Yeah I always thought I ate a shitloads and that I had a really fast metabolism, then I recently started going to the gym and tracking my calorie intake and holy crap it took me a lot of effort to reach even 2500 calories at first.
You heard it here first folks, fat people are mutants.
Feared and hated by society.
I have a genuine fast metabolism, but I'm careful with what I eat. Mostly fruit and veggies, occasional servings of dairy and meat, and the odd indulgence now and then doesn't cause any harm. In any case, our family was blessed with remarkably good health for almost everybody, we rarely fall sick and we have no genetic markers for a lot of diseases. For the record, I weigh in at 130 pounds and am 5'7.
I can't believe the amount of misinformation in this thread, and how heavily it's being agreed with when it's blatantly, objectively wrong. There's no such thing as having a "fast metabolism", your metabolism is dependent on your weight, height, age, activity level, and body composition. You only think you eat a lot because your appetite is smaller than what it should be. If you can somehow consume 3000+ calories a day and stay twiggy then you should probably get a team of scientists to monitor this, and win a nobel prize for having a body that defies the laws of thermodynamics. [editline]3rd November 2013[/editline] also lmao @ people who think they're healthy just because they're thin
For the sake of comparison, let's do some calculations. At rest, the average human puts out roughly 70 to 90 watts. Let's assume it's 80 watts for the sake of argument. In a day, that amounts to 6,912,000 joules. Converted to kilocalories (the usual unit of food energy), that's roughly 1650 kcal. And that's just from you lazing around all day. Keep in mind that the human brain, at rest, consumes roughly 20-25% of that.
It feels good :v: I'm the same way and can eat literally anything I want and gain next to nothing. The little weight that I do gain burns off like that *snap fingers*. Working on changing my eating habits though; not going to make the mistake of assuming this will last forever (which is too bad, I wouldn't mind if it did). Or I don't know- if a person has a high metabolic rate is it likely to slow down as they age?
I think this is what people mean when they talk about "thin privilege." Some folks are blessed to have a high metabolic rate, others have to work with unreasonable diligence to be thin. I, myself, normally eat like 1 meal a day. I don't have much of an appetite. However, I'm 6'2'' and around 245 pounds.

While the fat pride movement is going to take this and run with it, the reality as evidence by similar pieces like this before, is genetic mutations are literally less than 1% of the world's population. All obesity has a guaranteed pathology: eating too much and doing too little. Other factors can exacerbate the condition, but without that key step it cannot happen. Literally impossible. Quite possibly the most offensive thing about the fat pride movement is its egregious snubbing of science because it doesn't give them comfortable answers.
There not fat they are just big gened
Fast metabolism makes the gym hard, if i miss a day of eating 2500+ calories i can literally see myself wasting away and losing 5 days of progress at the gym.
Fast metabolism makes the gym hard, if i miss a day of eating 2500+ calories i can literally see myself wasting away and losing 5 days of progress at the gym.
yeah no you don't. This literally does not happen and I'm not even trying to be a dick about it. At most you are holding less water in the tissue. You know how prone to death you would be if protein catabolism was that quick? People with legitimate wasting conditions have to be put on a cocktail of drugs to maintain their health.
The Fat Liberation Movement will always elude me I mean it's not a goddamn lifestyle choice, it's a sign of being unhealthy and at serious risk of illness But on topic, would love to see more research on this front
You know how we tell people who have diabetes to control their diet? Even when insulin works for them? I'm not really seeing any difference between an actual genetic cause for diabetes and obesity. It predisposes you to obesity, nothing else, all it means is that, until we find a way to treat the root cause of the predisposition, we should be recommending dietary control, and then the onus is on the affected person if they refuse to.
Thank God I have a high metabolism. Yesterday I ate Taco Bell, cake, and some chicken from Safeway.
Most people who say this do not actually eat as much in calories daily as they think they do. Eating fast food does not make you fat. Eating cake, taco bell and chicken often on top of your daily maintenance calories would.
The other day I saw the 800 pound man in National Geographic and I was like WTF? How can he even walk?
The other day I saw the 800 pound man in National Geographic and I was like WTF? How can he even walk?
In many cases, once you reach that mass, you can't. Think of the pressure being applied to the lumbar section of the spine if you were to try walking a great deal at that weight.
Also, to add to what everyone said about underestimating calorie intake, most people overestimate the amount of work they do. I can easily, easily burn off two MREs back to back because I'm doing intense as fuck physical work. A few days ago I sawed up, split, and moved by hand just under a metric ton of firewood wood up a hill. (out of a swamp, to where the wood was being stacked for next year's use) That was just what I did during daylight hours, I did other fun stuff that night before coming in to watch Sons of Anarchy. This is my lifestyle, I eat whenever I'm hungry (or remember that I have to eat, sometimes I forget because I'm too focused on something) and I noticed an immediate change in my body when I started becoming more active. I don't expect anyone to drop what they're doing and live my kind of lifestyle, nor will I look down on somebody for saying "nah, I'm fine with my life," and doing whatever it is they do. I just get a little annoyed when people cry about being fat in between stuffing their face with obviously unhealthy food and doing nothing. I get even more annoyed when they try to claim they do all sorts of physical activity, (like rearranging furniture or something, a one-time deal) but blame other factors. Somebody I know actually tried to use, "I carry around a heavy backpack when I'm on campus," as a viable alternative to exercise, and then blamed the government for being fat because they allow unhealthy food to exist. I don't know about the rest of you, but that line of thinking doesn't make any sense to me.
Thank God I have a high metabolism. Yesterday I ate Taco Bell, cake, and some chicken from Safeway.

Myth: My metabolism is drastically different compared to other people No it's not. Excluding rare and serious metabolic conditions, which should be diagnosed by a doctor, people's metabolisms tend to be within 200-300 calories of each other. A review article of 67 scientific studies found that "when adjusted for differences in fat-free mass, resting energy expenditure values in obese and nonobese individuals tend to be comparable" and that there is "no association of baseline resting energy expenditure with weight change among 775 men during a 10-year period". The review draws the conclusion that "Regarding metabolic factors, available data indicate that although there are variations in resting energy expenditure and in the thermic effect of food, there is little evidence that these variations contribute significantly to the observed trends in weight gain." What's fucking insane is NASCAR drivers use a fuckton of calories and they're sitting the whole time. Mind you, they're in such an alert state and a lot of their major muscles are at least somewhat tense at any given moment on the track. As previously mentioned, the brain takes up far more energy than most people assume it does. Makes sense, though, it's an unbelievably impressive biological computer, one that makes even the beefiest desktop PC look like a fucking palm pilot in comparison. By the way, your goddamn avatar, every time I see it I make a grunting "OOOOOOH" noise.
My diet is entirely incosistant, when I can cook for myself, i start losing weight. When I'm forced to eat college food because we don't grocery shopping enough I start gaining weight. ITFUCKINGSUCKS.
some good news for facepunch users then
Thank God I have a high metabolism. Yesterday I ate Taco Bell, cake, and some chicken from Safeway.
Everytime I see posts like this http://i.imgur.com/ZwSDdw3.gif
I don't care what the fuck is happening with your metabolism or about any of your predispositions. If you are burning more calories then you are taking in, you will lose weight. Every and any healthy living thing does this. I know some people have fast metabolisms, lucky you, you're still unhealthy as fuck though if you're over indulging yourself with shitfood. Point is, there's no excuse for being fat besides the fact that you aren't working out and eating properly, because if you did both of those appropriately, you wouldn't be fat. The only excuse is having some sort of medical condition that doesn't allow you to move your body. [editline]wat[/editline] and being a fat shit that gained all the fucking weight to the point of immobility, that's not what I mean by medical condition.
I eat several times a week at mcdonald's and my diet is the most unhealthy thing ever yet not once have I ever weighed more than 110 pounds.
I eat several times a week at mcdonald's and my diet is the most unhealthy thing ever yet not once have I ever weighed more than 110 pounds.
congratulations. are you proud of being a person with no self control that will abuse any natural gift they can as soon as they realize it's possible to get away with it? I mean besides the fact that your future body is going to suffer in the long-term because you chose to sustain and nourish it with processed low quality shitmush.
I eat several times a week at mcdonald's and my diet is the most unhealthy thing ever yet not once have I ever weighed more than 110 pounds.
That's because you don't eat a ton of food consistently. I was 120 pounds for my entire life. I couldn't gain weight until I seriously buckled down and recorded everything that I ate for months to make sure I was eating enough consistently to gain weight. You do not have a gifted metabolism, you eat like an 11 year old female bulimic Chinese gymnast.
Thank God I have a high metabolism. Yesterday I ate Taco Bell, cake, and some chicken from Safeway.
Depends on your age. If you're below 22 you can ussually do this, but your body gets better at making fat when you're older and you don't burn as many calories when doing mundane things.
so is sitting in front of your computer all day, and drinking lots of mountain dew and never exercising, but people never really complain about other people doing that, because it's not seen as aesthetically unpleasant. stop pretending you care about fat people's health.
or alternatively because its harder to tell when someone is living like that, compared to it being incredibly obvious when someone is fucking fat not even sure what point you're trying to make
I used to be about 320 pounds (Granted, I'm 6'4" so it didn't look THAT bad but I was still pretty fat) until about six months ago when I was like "To hell with this, gotta change it". Cut out drinking soda/pop, eating junk food, fast food, coffee, alcohol and cereal. I haven't had any of those in six months and I don't miss them. At all. I stopped eating food after about 8 PM at night and would instead just drink water, which I also increased my intake of. Just doing that I managed to lose 60 pounds (I'm now 260, but not done yet) and I have now started adding exercise onto it as well to try and lose more. You know what the best part is? I have a high metabolism. So, really saying "I have a high metabolism so I can whatever I want" is really kinda BS. My family has always had weight problems, but we've also always had very high metabolisms. Yet it all had to do with WHAT I was eating and WHEN. After changing that, the weight started to melt off of me like butter. Mmm... butter.
