It's because of the short grow season for apples. They can't be grown year round and there was a market for them to be their year round. Capitalism 101. How can we make more profit? Extend our products shelf life. This usually applies to 'white' bread. I prefer wheat over 'white' and 'rye' for the taste. BBC America - Food and Drink: 10 Things That Taste Different in the U.S.
I don't think I've ever read a more pretentious article in my life.

It may seem harmless to homogenize the fat in it, but that's what makes it build in your arteries. Very bad stuff. There's all sorts of shit on the supermarket shelf that can kill us. Just gotta keep your eyes peeled and your brain informed. [editline]30th April 2014[/editline]
compared to the vomit-infused, fructose-y chalk that somehow passes for chocolate here. Yeah, I’m looking at you, Hershey’s.
Something tells me that the writer had some strong, biased feelings before he wrote the article :)
Potential for the title to read "Europe bans Apple products".
Something tells me that the writer had some strong, biased feelings before he wrote the article :)
It's not biased, it's just that Hershey's tastes like shit compared to real chocolate bars.
This came up in my critical thinking class on the subject of fracking; if something is suspected to be harmful do we keep doing it until it's proven harmful or do we stop doing it and resume when it is proven safe?
How do you prove something safe?
It's actually hard to find stuff with preservatives here, a great number of products have something like 'NO ARTIFICIAL FLAVOURS, NO PRESERVATIVES' stickered on them. In particular, alot of lollies lack artificial flavours, and alot of breads lack preservatives (can't speak for loaves below <$3, I always buy the decent $4 loaves).
what the fuck, why do they cost that much?????? In the Netherlands at least, we have good quality bread for around 80 eurocents, 1 euro if you want it white. How they hell does it cost that much in the USA?
My friend who visited America told me that most bread there was really sweet. Is there any truth to that ? If so, why would you make bread sweet ? Sounds quite disgusting actually.
I have a feeling lots of Europeans come here and buy Wonder Bread or some other disgusting unnatural shit and think it's indicative of all American bread. The bread in Ireland didn't really taste any different than here.
As much as I tend to be cautious of GMOs and avoid them at all costs, some of the bans on food export are ridiculous. Did you know that it was illegal to sell this: In California?
BBC America - Food and Drink: 10 Things That Taste Different in the U.S.
This is a pretty silly article, because the majority of things in article that the author complains about are easily available - hell, the Publix (a massive supermarket chain) deli/bakery has proper cheeses, made out-of-country and in-country. Same for sausages and the like. You just have to look outside of the regular food isles. Almost everything that Europe has, America has as well (though often more expensive than the American products). About the only thing I can think off that Europe has that we can't get in America is some types of cheeses which aren't pasteurized.

Seems pricey, all about Happy Bread at £1 a pop nahm sayin [t]http://www.coultonsbread.co.uk/communities/4/004/012/250/204//images/4601323337.jpg[/t]
Also Europe has much stricter standards, a lot of food and medicine legal here isn't legal there.
Actually that's not true, a lot of E numbers which are banned in the US are legal here, it's just not practice to use them. A lot of cosmetic medicines such as types of botox which are banned in the US are also legal here.
The great thing about America is that "British" food, "French" food, etc. are also all American food. I can, within 10 miles of my house get just about any cultural delicacy from around the world. The author of that article seems to be an ignorant snob who hasn't even tried to find the thing he wants. The normal stater brothers grocery store has about 30 different cheeses to pick from from all over Europe. As a side note: There's zero proof that cow hormones have any effect on people.
It's not biased, it's just that Hershey's tastes like shit compared to real chocolate bars.
Hershey's cocoa powder is actually pretty legit.
$4 loaf? Seems pricey, all about Happy Bread at £1 a pop nahm sayin [t]http://www.coultonsbread.co.uk/communities/4/004/012/250/204//images/4601323337.jpg[/t]
Bread loaves here are like twice as long as that.
Pears are better anyway.
liking both master race or something
Bread loaves here are like twice as long as that.
But they give you cancer and black lung.
canadian apples are hazardous to the moose community
If I recall correctly, most milk from the USA isn't allowed to be sold in europe since it contains excess hormones and other shit.
Free steroids in milk? Fuck yeah. To be honest though, there's a lot more shit that doesn't get publicized as much. The FDA has a thing called "Food Defect Action Levels" that allow a certain amount of rat feces and shit in your food: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Food_Defect_Action_Levels Personally I find it stunning that the preservatives in apples is cancerous.
