I'm in California, these better not cross the country.
Doesn't look that big. I've seen plenty of mosquitos at that size. Is there a better picture or are they really not that big of a deal?
Mosquitoes in Romania are twice smaller than the small one in OP's pic. If I'd see one of the huge ones I'd freak the fuck out.
Florida continues to be the USA's Australia Lite.
Aren't the cicadas out down there as well?
17 year cicadas coming out on the east coast pretty soon i think
oh man, not being a floridian anymore has it's upsides. having numerous mosquito's biting you is bad, these things biting you numerous times must be worse. at least you can see them so you can swat 'em, they have an upside!
Nope. NopeNopeNopeNopeNope
Pretty sure that is a mosquito hawk. Mosquito hawks hunt mosquitoes.
False.
Despite their common names, as adults, crane flies do not prey on mosquitoes, nor do they bite humans. Some larval crane flies are predatory and may occasionally eat mosquito larvae. Adult crane flies feed on nectar or they do not feed at all. Once they become adults, most crane fly species exist as adults only to mate and die.
Good fucking god. There's no way I'm living in Florida anymore if these fucking things arrived.
fuck i'm like 20 minutes from there
God-damn, i love the UK; the worst flying bastard we get is wasps.
Midgies. Bastards.
God-damn, i love the UK; the worst flying bastard we get is wasps.
Horse flies and if you're an unlucky bastard, you might also get the Blandford Fly. Either way, they're nasty bastards that have a fucking nasty bite to boot.
There must be a rise in oxygen in the air, it's the only way an insect would be able to grow so large in a small time period.
The only thing I've seen here in Fort McCoy (It's in Ocala.) is those damn fuckface horse flies, although we call them yellow flies due to them being yellow, I believe they're a type of horse fly. Oh well, we'll be going down to Ft. Lauderdale in a week, and they spray constantly down there. I barely even see regular mosquitoes down there.
Pansies.
That is a cranefly, they eat nectar and some species don't eat at all as adults. THIS is the size of the one mentioned in the article, Psorophora ciliata. Beware. holy crap can you imagine going camping and waking up with a bunch of those stuck in your hair...
Time to invest in a shotgun I guess Won't wait for them to suck cows dry.....
Pretty sure that is a mosquito hawk. Mosquito hawks hunt mosquitoes.
That's a small one. I see tons of those here. Usually when they stand still they're about the size of my palm. I know they're harmless but I usually get a bit freaked out because they look like MASSIVE fucking mosquitoes.
God-damn, i love the UK; the worst flying bastard we get is wasps.
I get bitten by mozzies as big as the fuckers in the OP, do you live in like the most northern part of scotland or something?
Good luck with that floridians..floridanians...whatever you call yourselves.
typically most people who live in florida are not originally from florida.
The heat and humidity is worse. Tallahasee life forever.
i live in alabama, how long until we have to deal with them, too
Living in UP Michigan pays off for once. I suppose. Gonna tease my girlfriend all summer for going to Florida while she's there. :v:
