They also keep it because 7.62x39 has better barrier penetration which is a huge plus in urban combat.
There is an old myth about bullet from AK being able to penetrate a piece of rail. Actually, it's closer to truth that you think.
Isn't it common for soldiers to purchase their own uniforms anyway in different countries, despite the fact that these aren't actually their own?
You can buy and use your own equipment (magazine pockets, vests, goggles, gloves, boots, etc.) if you can make your case of why you need it and if your CO approves of it.

I always wonder why US soldiers weapons seem so varied and opposite to that why chechen war russians are dressed in all sorts of clothes but non of them seem to use any kind of optics and stuff.

First and the beginning of the second chechen war occurred in the period of great millitary stagnation after ussr collapse. Everything was fucked up. I would be surprised to see our troops equipped with some good gear back in those days.

Example, as reconnaissance you may use a night-time optic you have bought yourself because you and your CO (and his CO and so forth) agree that the one you were given is nowhere near good enough. As for weapon attachments, that depends if your squad or platoon or whatever are in need of such things and that the additions doesn't negatively affect your ability to act swiftly and accordingly. It's always good to have an edge over your opponent. A vest with your own mag-pockets could drastically decrease your reload time. Your own pair of boots could keep your feet dry and from harms way for a longer period of time. The possibilities are endless. The only obstacle is a regulation.

But they use optics and all kinds of other tacticool accessories on their AKs nowadays.
The Kremlin warned the west against welcoming Ukraine to join Nato
Is this something we're (NATO Countries) considering?
Is this something we're (NATO Countries) considering?
Not at all. Ukraine wouldn't be able to work up to the standards of it, especially now that half their country is occupied. And that's if they actually say yes to such a corrupted state join.
I wonder what he thought the army does
He must be a Russian version of the guy from the first 90 seconds of this.
I wonder what he thought the army does
He might've been one of those incredibly naive soldiers who signed up with the hope of only defending his country, not invading another.
Is this something we're (NATO Countries) considering?
No, it's just something that Ukraine has been hoping for us to do before that big red blob of Poutine to the east comes back for what's left of it. There's no way NATO would take that risk. Although if the baltics are any clue we'd probably let them in if they survive this whole mess to a point where it'd be safe to do so.
Could have told you that months ago...
That's a shame, because there is a lot of variations: AK, AKM, AK-74, AKM-74, AKS, AKS-74, and brand new AK-12. Not even counting AK-based weaponry, like Groza, Saiga and RPK...
damn... thanks for this informative post
Think of it like this: Ukraine and quite broadly speaking, East Europe& Central Asia have under Russian sphere of influence quite often in history; I can't recall moments when Ukraine has been as vehemently opposed to Russia as it is now, and Russia opposed to Ukraine's change of mind to ally itself with the West. So, from that perspective,I recall the events that followed after Cuba's shift in policy after the communist takeover also showed an opposition from the US, because the former US-friendly gov't was overthrown...and neighboring Cuba was becomming a bro with the USSR. Here's a short background story on Cuba prior to the commie revolution [editline]15th September 2014[/editline]
sorry accidental rating, was reading on html5 and java shit that i will be attempting and then clicked on something :v:
And we came to a hot AK variations discussion. I love facepunch.
damn... thanks for this informative post
Well, to be honest, he's only mentioning Russian variations, and he forgot the AKMS, AKMN, AKMSN and AK-74N; the entire AK-100 series from 101 to 109, and the other nation's variants which are just as numerous and varied for Poland, Bulgaria, Hungary, China and so on. What I'm trying to say is; AKs are a clusterfuck, don't bother ID'ing them beyond caliber and stock-foldability, waste of fucking time.
