Gullwing doors for the backseats of a crossover? That personally looks absolutely terrible. Without the gullwings it would look nice but something about it is just bad.
98% of the time they'll be down and you'll never notice.
98% of the time they'll be down and you'll never notice.
I am going to buy one and install a pintle-mounted sawed off punt gun in the back. Drive-by duckhunting like it's a goddamn Blackhawk helicopter, fuck yes. [editline]28th September 2015[/editline] I will do all this just to prove you wrong, OvB.
Hydrogen is a stupid fuel for cars. You can either get it through fracking, in which case you aren't saving the environment at all, or you can use an immense amount of energy to get it out of water. (The same amount of energy in a battery would drive a car further)
actually its not so nuanced, you crack methane to make hydrogen, but the benefit is that methane is a much worse greenhouse gas than co2, by removing it, even if you leak hydrogen its not as bad. also natural gas is going to be around for decades as it makes an excellent companion to renewables on the power grid, plus even with 100% renewable generation, we still need it for heating, and its by far more efficient than alternatives such as pellet stoves or electric heating systems. if we're going to have natural gas for a long time then, hydrogen isn't a particularly bad source for fuel since you can crack it off of 97% of natural gas, which is already distributed so you wouldn't need to build out too much more infastructure. also another scheme is to take renewables, make hydrogen, convert that into methane then feed that into the existing gas pipelines, transfer it to where it needs to go, and crack that into hydrogen again

Kinda defeats the point of making cars cleaner if you are getting it from Methane. Electric is a much more general energy source which can be produced via clean and dirty source, with dirty sources slowly being phased out. Electrolysis is inefficient as fuck, use the power to charge a battery instead and you will go a lot further.
The gullwing doors look really nice for easy access, i mean I've seen my fair share of elderly having trouble entering and exiting some cars and this surely would make that a bunch easier since the roof won't be in the way.
I've got my doubts, it seems like they're sticking to electric because it's the most practical and probably also where all their R&D is at.
Im a mechanical engineer and did research on a hydrogen fuel cycle as a way to power ship equipment while the main engine is off. I completely understand Elon's point in the fact that Hydrogen is a completely stupid way to store energy. The general population just sees "O wow Water out of the engine!". But they dont see the extremely low energy efficiency and the extreme cost and short lifetime of the PEM hydrogen cells, with their platina catalyst. Our result was that it would have a return on investment of 17+ years if we get better fuel cells and hydrolyses (to make hydrogen out of water) machines in the future. And that you would need to replace the platinum catalyst of the fuel cell every 4 years. Its easy to see why it doesn't work if you look at the efficiency's in the energy chain: Water + Electricity-->Hydrolyses(50%)--> Hydrogen Compress (90%) to 300+ Bar for it to fit in a tank whats not the size of a zeppelin. Hydrogen --> (PEM Fuel cell 50%) --> Water + Electricity. 0.5*0.5*0.9=22.5%. So of all the energy you put into the fuel cell, you get a max of 22.5% back. A normal Lead Car battery already has an efficiency of 85%. And L-Ion 90%+ And they dont have the nightmare of storing the highly flammable gas at 300Bar.
My thoughts have always been that for a hydrogen fuel cell car to be viable, you'd have to split the hydrogen creation and compressing out of the car - perhaps as a device you install in your garage. It would still not be as effective as Li-ion, but at least it wouldn't be as horrible as running every step of the process in the car itself. Not that I would want a hydrogen car myself, at most I would want a stationary hydrogen generator in my house - to pull down on energy costs - if that ever becomes a viable thing.
I also just like the simple elegance of solar panel -> battery -> motor. Site's getting ready: http://www.teslamotors.com/modelx
And they dont have the nightmare of storing the highly flammable gas at 300Bar.
Not only storing it, but if it leaks you can't smell it and because hydrogen is so small it can slowly leak through the container you are storing it in. Flame is invisible to so you can't even tell if it's on fire without getting close to it.
Flame is invisible to so you can't even tell if it's on fire without getting close to it.
you can usually tell by the explosions
Well. I'd imagine they'd add a scent to hydrogen that they pump into cars like they do natural gas for homes. I only see hydrogen being practical if electricity becomes basically free or extremely cheap. Then again, then batteries also become more practical. Maybe if hydrogen becomes cheap ( by cheap or free electricity) we can use it in older ICE cars for those who can't afford battery powered cars. Although I don't know the cost of converting.
I was kinda late to the Tesla party so the Model X ship had pretty much already sailed by the time I got my Model S, so unless by some miracle I get 10 referrals in the next month, the closest I'll come to one is a test drive. The Model 3, however... I'm going to show up to that unveiling event with a squad of friends and we're going to scour the event for the pre-order table so I can get my hands on Sig #1.
i didn't see the price but telling from the bird doors it looks expensive as fuck

Tesla Time is worse than Valve Time.
Tesla Time is worse than Valve Time.
It really is. [editline]29th September 2015[/editline] I know as soon as I go take a pee it's going to start up. [editline]29th September 2015[/editline] okay good, i made it.
Thirty-five minutes late. Maybe they lost power.
Thirty-five minutes late. Maybe they lost power.
People at a Tesla forum are there posting pics. They're all just waiting around drinking at the complementary bar. They're getting pretty frustrated. ~35 minutes late is disrespectful to the fans.
Even Musk? I would be shocked, he's always pretty excited to present something.
(the guests are waiting around) No clue/word on what's going on behind the scenes. Starting to worry its something not good.
I was at the Powerwall unveil event. It ran something like an hour and a half late, so... Buckle up.
