[QUOTE=Tools;46141098]So when will I be able to download and print myself an Audi A3 1,8T with functional engine?
These "future" cars isn't something I'd throw money at.
I'm waiting for a download of the GM EV1, mainly because I want to see if GM would lose their shit over seeing their forbidden car on the road again.
Is the car electric? Because if not, then have fun building the entire car and having to buy and load up an internal combustion engine, those things weigh a ton
That looks a little rough around the edges, I'll wait for a proper scene release

You have it the other way around.
Looks like an adult version of those small cars for kids.
cant wait to print myself a fuckin' batmobile
It's a start.
A few good friends of mine helped with the production of the car, they were contracted by Local Motors to print it in ORNL's (Oak Ridge Nat. Lab) 3D printing facilities. One of the important goals is to test the strength factors of large 3D printed structures like this and to attempt to simplify manufacturing.
Oh wow that car looks stupid.
We printed a car and this is all you have to say?
Honestly, it looks like a gust of wind would take it down the block.
Wouldn't last around here, where shit like this happens:
Reminds me of the time a bunch of kids blew up a bunch of condoms and let them go out the window while riding the bus. I was like, eight, at the time and that was the day I learned what a condom was.
I also learned that the state troopers get really mad if you release a swarm of condoms out on the highway from a moving vehicle.
[editline]4th October 2014[/editline]
Then later that week I learned you can get detention for sticking a slinky out the window and causing it to fly back fifty feet and touch the car behind the bus.
Imagine that 3d printer "ink" would be eatable and you could put many different tastes in a printer. You could just download good sounding recipes, print the food and eat it. That would be awesome
There's actually a 3d printer out there that prints sugar and chocolate stuff, they had it at some convention and they had these really intricate candies and coloured chocolate shapes that looked really good.

Seriously who cares how the fricken car looks
it was 3D PRINTED
we PRINTED A GODDAMN CAR who the fuck cares what it looks like

Would you want that thing sitting in your driveway every day?
Would you want that thing sitting in your driveway every day?
For the 7,000 price point they were estimating, with the ability to customize shit, sure.
I just want I, Robot's omni directional sphere wheeled cars

If it's 3d printed, it could look however the fuck you want. It could be a cube, or it could be a batmobile. It doesn't matter how it looks. That's the infinite variable that's completely irrelevant to the fact that this thing and these people fucking exist.

Personally I am not that hyped. It's not like the entire car was printed whole. Only the parts that still have to be assembled. And it cost over $7000.

I didn't say every 3D-printed car (I want a replica of the Tucker 48). I'm just referring to this car that got printed.
The question is, are these cars good in a crash?
If they are to be sold to the public, its a good idea to ensure they are safe

Crashing it into another car poses no threat for the passengers of the other car.
You, however, will be collected along with the bits and pieces of your self-designed 3D-printed car.
What's the point? The final product looks like ass compared to a traditional car and the process is far slower than traditional mass manufacturing. It's a lose lose situation.
IT.
CAN.
LOOK.
LIKE.
ANYTHING.
FUCKING ANYTHING.
Just because they chose a ridiculous outlandish design to print just this once doesn't mean that all future uses of this technology will be limited by this framework. THE WHOLE POINT of this fucking achievement was to make something that ISN'T limited to an established frame.
You fuckers are latching on to the wrong thing here. It's not about the god damn design. It's the fact that these guys made a car that uses dozens instead of thousands of components that can be built to any spec in a way that was impossible in the past.
They do that and you fuckers are hung up on the particular model they printed; the ONE infinitely varying element here that doesn't fucking matter and has no impact on what they did do.
Am I more mad than I should be? Probably. I feel like I'm the only one who actually paid attention to what the fuck they actually accomplished here. I can't help but imagine all these stupid ass comments being echoed in the hugboxes that house the important people who can make or break these types of operations.
elbows too pointy would not download free car that signifies the immense progress of technology
what makes you think it's free?
All the expense comes from the material.
The design itself could be free but prolly not.
A printed car is a retarded idea in the first place because the car will get fucking totaled and you prolly get seriously injured from a crash that would normally just dent a usual car.
Depends on the material.
Depends on the fill pattern.
Depends on the design.
How about I 3D print a motorcycle because then it doesn't matter what kind I'm on if I crash

It's half a car; everything that actually makes it move is manufactured normally.
The bulk of a car's price comes from the shit that makes it move; body panels (essentially what the Strati is) are just sheet metal that's pressed into the correct shape and slapped onto the chassis.

You know why cars use thousands of parts? Because there is no single material that can do everything. We need metal for strength/durability/conductivity, plastics for lightness and ease of moulding, fabrics/foam for comfort, rubbers for insulation/tires/dampening, glass for windscreens/mirrors/insulators, silicon for electronics, etc.
What they've printed here is a goddamn plastic tub. It still has hundreds if not thousands of parts because of all the electronics and additional things required to make it a car.
The point here is that they printed a fucking car and it only took two days.
If this was cost effective, which it will be in the future, it's revolutionary. But at the moment you can get a really nice used car for 7k.
