Dozens of people have been killed or injured in violence in China's Xinjiang region on Monday, state media say.
A knife-wielding gang attacked a police station and government offices in Shache county, Xinhua news agency said.
Police shot dead many attackers, it said, and "dozens" of Uighur and Han Chinese civilians were killed or hurt.
Although an exiled Uighur leader disagrees
An exile Uyghur leader has claimed that at least 2,000 ethnic minority Uyghurs may have been killed by Chinese security forces following riots last week in a restive county in China’s western Xinjiang region, far more than reported by the state media.
Citing “evidence” from the ground, Rebiya Kadeer, president of the Germany-based World Uyghur Congress (WUC), accused the Chinese authorities of a cover up of what she called a “massacre” of Uyghurs in Yarkand (in Chinese, Shache) county in Xinjiang’s Kashgar prefecture on July 28.
Chinese state media had at first said “dozens” of people were killed but revised upwards the death toll to 96 this week, saying the riots erupted after a “gang” of Uyghurs attacked a police station and government offices in Yarkand’s Elishku township and that the authorities reacted with “a resolute crackdown to eradicate terrorists.”

In Xinjiang, in China’s western region, people wearing head scarves, veils and long beards are no longer allowed to board city buses, for fear they might perpetrate a terror attack.
Xinjiang is home to the Muslim Uighur people who speak a Turkic language. The area has been beset for years by violence which the government blames on Islamist militants and fundamentalist Muslims.
Five “types” of passengers are now banned from riding buses in Xinjiang: Those who wear veils, head scarves, a loose-fitting garment called a jilbab, clothing with the crescent moon and star, and those with long beards.
On the way to lose public support.
China's never had a war against guerillas. It's incredible how their military leadership forgot the first way to handle an asymmetrical warfare is: Don't lose support from the population.
After all, today's China was born from asymmetrical warfare.
Pretty sure the bus ban was only valid until the 20th August, which is when some international sports competition is over.
"Rioters" my ass, they were probably just protesting peacefully.
It's not looking good.

Your sources only say dozen.
Not thousands.
I'm not sure if the guy claiming 2000 dead is exactly a reliable source. The BBC certainly isn't reporting that particular source although they are also putting the death toll as potentially a hundred. Will need to get some more sources.
Should've sent the Villager+Goat card during the Industrial Age. That would've relaxed everyone.

I highly doubt it, since they're being cracked down on so hard, unless there is evidence otherwise, I wouldn't believe it's simply a peaceful protest.

Yeah it's a pretty dumb thread title until we get actual proof
I'm doubtful it was two thousand and I'm doubtful it was only 3 or 4 people. It's probably somewhere between that.
Oh shit one of my friends just came back from Urumqi.
I feel bad for his family.
Hopefully it isn't 2000, that seems a bit too much.

Yes I agree. Somewhere between no one and everyone. :v:
Don't trust governments when they control so much information.
And those bans? Fucking tyrannical.
Don't trust people who provide no evidence too.
no offense, but china has seen an incline of extremist violence over the past years, a common way for islamic extremists to send a message in China, is having a knife wielding group of men and women go rampart in a public area, killing chinese and tourists alike.
Most of these terror groups stem from the same region of China.
Like the massacre of sparrows, this is a typical china way to react to a problem, making it much worse for themselves in the end.

either that or the East Turkestan Islamic Movement is involved. (aka the recent suicide attack in Tiananmen square)
