this got rated funny but I actually agree with most points on the second article. Just the fact that mining bitcoins consumes so much energy over what it is merely some abstract data on computers that is supposed to make you e-rich is absolutely ridiculous. Energy that could be conservated or put into more useful things. It is the very definition of greed over human life and the conservation of the planet.
[editline]17th January 2014[/editline]
And those who will say "B-BUT MY ONLINE DURGS!!", yes, it is a nice thing that you can do that kind of stuff with Bitcoins but it has other better solutions like lobbying for the opening of safe and regulated recreational drug markets, not the establishment of anonymous online markets where asides from drugs you can conveniently order things like hitmen and child pornography (mind you, this is very often 'on demand' child pornography, not just pic sharing. There are children who get actively abused by the demand of CP)

Do you have a damn idea what you're talking about? If you knew literally anything about cryptos you'd know what you just said literally makes no sense.

It's not uncommon for the Police to sell the assets they seized from a criminal or organization. There are police auction websites where you can find everything from dresses to vehicles.

Are you retarded? The government doesn't enforce drug laws to make themselves rich

You're right, it's actually to make private prisons rich who in turn make the individuals in said government rich.
It would be amusing to see the bitcoin community's reaction if the us government somehow managed to forcibly crash Bitcoin to a point where it wouldn't be able to come back up.

Silk Road didnt sell anything the vendors did
regardless, no
Nice counter argument.
What is there to counter
Barttool clearly has no idea what he's talking about, implying that energy on the scale that mining rigs are using is something that is precious and needs to be conserved (which is through and through bullshit, entertainment uses energy and isn't inherently ~useful~), implying that the currency generated makes you "e-rich" (because all the money I've made from btc/ltc is clearly fake, right?), and implying that it's only used for drugs, hitmen, or child porn.
When someone says something that is so clearly, thoroughly, and absolutely stupid, sometimes there is no counter argument that needs to be made.
Why would you even WANT the bitcoin market to crash?

Anarcho-Capitalist and Libertarians support cryptocurrencies as they allow for trade which is supposedly "unmonitorable" and by crashing such a market you would not only trash the ideals of both groups you would most likely cause them to become as laughable as Communist parties.
Also please crash the fucking cryptocurrency markets, I'd like to purchase an R9 280x at a reasonable price in the next few months, and these fucking mine-crazy psychopaths are making it impossible.

Gonna dissapoint you there, those who mine with R9 280x are almost exclusively mining for Litecoins.
So that shows how ignorant and uneducated you are.

what a wonderfully arrogant and self righteous post, you're so likeable :)
i'd argue that any amount of energy is a fairly precious resource that you shouldn't just waste on random bullshit. entertainment is culture which has an inherent, though abstract value. producing the denominations of a currency should use the least amount of energy possible. also while bitcoins sell for a lot of money afaik it's hard to actually exchange a significant amount of them for real world money
Too bad that wont be possible.
considering how unstable bitcoin is anyway I doubt it'd take much - it's going to happen anyway since most of the value is a massive bubble and the rest is just due to the enforced rarity

I think it's funny how the only people against bitcoin (or other cryptos) either
1. Don't understand how they work
2. Were against bitcoins when they first came out, and don't want to be proved a fool
3. Have a personal vendetta in some form or another (I.E. hate ideologies or philosophies that support bitcoin)
4. Can't stand to see people making cash from ~magic internet money~
they should just feed their employees with pizza bought in buttcoins for the next couple years

I think bitcoins are a cool idea. Doesn't stop me from thinking they're basically useless atm. That they've been co-opted by people with mental political beliefs is a whole different kettle of fish.

They were created by those people:
The root problem with conventional currency is all the trust that's required to make it work. The central bank must be trusted not to debase the currency, but the history of fiat currencies is full of breaches of that trust. Banks must be trusted to hold our money and transfer it electronically, but they lend it out in waves of credit bubbles with barely a fraction in reserve. We have to trust them with our privacy, trust them not to let identity thieves drain our accounts. Their massive overhead costs make micropayments impossible.
Mental or not, these people have been behind Wikileaks, Tor, Bitcoin, Defense Distributed, Silk Road, etc., and you're going to have to learn to live with them.

hahahaha
What baffles me about Bitcoin (or any digital currency) is how it came to be accepted as a currency. Why did anyone agree that it was worth money in the first place?
implying that energy on the scale that mining rigs are using is something that is precious and needs to be conserved (which is through and through bullshit, entertainment uses energy and isn't inherently ~useful~)
As said before, entertainment does have some form of abstract value. Plus what I actually meant was that the energy being spent on mining those bitcoins could have very well stayed on the grid and be used for stuff that, you know, are actually important like powering houses, factories, streetlights, hospitals... the list goes on. Instead more energy is being consumed now to provide for all those things and bitcoins on top; which, yeah, it's not that much energy being consumed right now, but if bitcoin is to become a legitimate and widely used currency worldwide (no, it is not that yet, I'm talking about being used as easily as local currency, where I can literally go into any store and buy stuff with it) then the amount of energy that is used on bitcoins will actually become concerning, until you hit the 25 million bitcoins and even then a lot of energy would still be used to process all those transactions.
implying that the currency generated makes you "e-rich" (because all the money I've made from btc/ltc is clearly fake, right?)
While technically you can exchange bitcoins for dollars and other real currencies, tell me: If I were to have 28 million dollars worth of bitcoins, could I exchange this whole amount of bitcoins into dollars in one single swoop? Besides, wouldn't this defeat the point of the currency? Isn't a currency supposed to be a medium of exchange of goods, not a good in itself? What everyone seems to be focused on right now is the exchange price of bitcoins, and yet the kinds of goods you can actually acquire with them are simply not that many. So if I can't easily exchange all the bitcoins I want to dollars and if I can't use all my e-money to buy anything I want in online and mortar and brick shops and services, then there isn't a whole lot real value in bitcoins.
and implying that it's only used for drugs, hitmen, or child porn.
I didn't imply it was the only thing you could get, but considering bitcoin makes the acquisition of all those three "goods" way easier than through regular currency, it makes bitcoin very popular with those kinds of markets. Any legal goods you can buy with bitcoins you can probably buy with regular currency too. The fact that the SilkRoad wallet was so big is only proof of this.
When someone says something that is so clearly, thoroughly, and absolutely stupid, sometimes there is no counter argument that needs to be made.
"Oh No! I think someone is wrong on the internet! I'll call him stupid instead of telling him why I think he's wrong!!"
bet they wholesale under value just to crash the market, here I thought they would have split them up and funded the CIA with it
The CIA makes more than enough with their machine that turns water into cocaine.
And malt liquor.
What baffles me about Bitcoin (or any digital currency) is how it came to be accepted as a currency. Why did anyone agree that it was worth money in the first place?
Silkroad, money laundering, black markets and lack of faith for fiat currency.
Cryptocurrecies served as a perfect medium of exchange for all of this.

Also my bias is the fact that I stowed away $350 to buy a new video card, and then suddenly OMGINTERNETCOINS and now I need an extra $150 that's going to be impossible to get in the coming months do to education and all that.
