Rate me dumb for not knowing but id like a genuine response: what exactly does it mean to be triggered?

when you see something that causes you to relive a trauma or something
i.e. a rape victim might overhear somebody crack a joke about rape and be reminded of it
for some reason people who've never had anything particularly traumatizing happen to them like to crack jokes about it because they saw an image of some tumblr post that's definitely real and completely not satirical talking about being triggered by toast because they're breadkin

a real trigger is when you see, hear, or otherwise just experience something that brings back memories that bring on some kind of attack (anxiety, panic, whatever), like a rape victim having a panic attack because she experienced something that made her flash back to her attack.
Unfortunately some people on tumblr started using it for everything that makes them sorta upset and now a whole ton of assholes have taken to calling any kind of trigger warning, no matter how genuinely helpful to people who might need it, an influence by "Tumblr SJWs".

It's what Tumblrites experience when someone disagrees with them on their blogs.

these kind of posts make me wonder how many people's entire perception of ~the tumblr~ is based off of 4chan greentexts and r/tumblrinaction

Tumblr is definitely far more polluted with idiot teenage girls with mental issues than anywhere else on the internet.

i dunno about this when if you investigate half of those posts that get circulated like germkin or whatever the hell else half of them are blatantly fake and like 25% are deleted because they got ridiculed by the rest of the community
i could pull 50 screenshots of pedophilia supporters off of this website and convince somebody facepunch.com is a pedophile haven, doesn't mean it's true (well).
When I grew up I just thought of her as the actual owner of the house seeing how she owned a fur coat and a ton of jewlery that she put on when she goes into town to play cards with her friends in that one episode.
Never really gave it much thought really.
i watched T&J all the time, and not once did i ever think she was the maid, hell i still didnt know her as the maid until a few years ago. i just never saw any other humans around in the household so i just thought it was the owner beating the shit out of her cat

This is definitely true

i'd say facepunch's rust/gmod kid to regular user ratio is the same as tumblr's ratio of moron sjw users to regular users.

there was this one user who made a satirical blog, sadvaporwavebabe, and she made some of the most obvious fake gender-identifying bullshit ever, but she deleted the blog after a while because the crazy dudes on reddit and 4chan used her posts as fuel to rail on marginalized people.
those reddit/4chan guys are hilarious because they think they're hot shit for pouncing on some ~stupid sjw~, completely oblivious to the fact that they're attacking a satire blog
I'm glad amazon can label it without removing it. Because if it was banned I'd be furious.

I know it's inaccurate, I was just having a laugh. Apologies.
I always thought the maid was the owner of the house and tried to deal with Tom and Jerry's bullshit as much as possible
I definitely don't remember the racial prejudices but now looking back on the episodes they claimed had these prejudices they were definitely wrong
But it's a good thing that Warner Bros has decided to keep these series in their original form and not try to erase/edit them in a way that makes it seem less offensive

To expand upon what others have said, originally the phrase comes from veterans suffering from PTSD. In some serious cases, those with PTSD would have severe episodes in response to certain events or simulations. For example, a veteran who survived a car bomb might hear a firework go off, and flash back to his traumatic event. The firework in this example would be considered the "trigger" because it is "triggering" him, and the act of having an episode as being "triggered".
Recently the feminist movement, LGBT movement, and rape support groups have adopted the term for survivors of rape, prejudice, hate crimes, etc. This has led to more liberal use of the term. Some people have seen this as "hijacking" the term and claim that it has made the word lose meaning and that it is offensive to veterans suffering from "real" PTSD.
Finally, the more liberal use of the term has led to it's misuse. People have begun to replace the words offending, agitating, annoying, etc. with triggering. The sincere misuse has led to satirical misuse leading people to spout it ironically to annoy people members of the groups who take it seriously.
It's a parallel to the word retard really. It's abused to the point where the common usage isn't the actual meaning but enough people both use and defend its original meaning that isn't completely lost.
I never really thought about it being racist. I always thought it was her house lol In some of the shorts, she didn't seem any different than a maid in today's time.
well that's good of amazon and warner brothers i suppose
Honestly, they handled this really well, imo.

What is it with conservatives and making internet memes with several hundred times the number of words that internet memes should have?
/pol/ and mens' rights sites are especially notorious for it
IIRC, they had the same warning run before a few episodes of Loony Tunes when Cartoon Network ran every single episode of them. It was a beautifully worded disclaimer.
They also only showed certain episodes after 10:00, including most of Tex Avery's stuff.
The main problem is most of the T&J cartoons were irreparably edited without saving the negatives, while the racist Bugs cartoons were edited using b reels, thus preserving the original footage intact.
I have most of T&J unedited, and the streaming ones are still truncated, despite the statement that they aren't.

It was her house.
She was only the maid in the episodes where tom is gray. When Tom turns blue-gray, it's her house.
