Atheism is a belief
Are we seriously going to do this again
Are we seriously going to do this again
Atheism is not a religious belief, but in technicality, it is the belief in the absence of a god.
BELIEF.

No. Atheism means the lack of a belief in a god or gods. Some people go further and believe that no gods exist. These are not the same.
Atheism isn't even a religion at all. It's just something to label people without a religion.

It's the absence of a belief in god.
The prefix A denotes without. It literally means without theism.
If atheism was incorporated into school, it wouldn't cause the curriculum to have a section saying 'god doesn't exist' or 'god is dead', it would have no section for or against it at all.

HOW CAN YOU DENY THE EXISTENCE OF SEMI GELATINOUS SHAPE SHIFTING DEMONS FROM THE DEPTHS OF THE OCEAN
CLOSE MINDEEEDDDDDD
Sweet jesus, some people here actually understand the meaning of Atheism! Incredible.
It should also be noted that Atheism has nothing to do with the afterlife, karma, or other beliefs; it is strictly a lack of belief in a god(s). Some forms of Buddhism would count as atheistic.
Inb4 religious argument.
Why can't we just get along and go our separate ways? I'll live my life how I want to, and I'll leave you out of it.

I don't know, maybe because that's impossible given human nature.
Nice bias.
You effectively just said every religious person is incoherent, among other things. By extension, you're effectively also saying everyone with an opinion (besides your own) is incoherent as well.
What an incoherent post.
What an incoherent post.
What an obvious bias.
By saying his post is incoherent, you're obviously saying that man himself is incoherent. And if he's incoherent, everyone he knows is incoherent!
Honestly TH89, I expected more from you than to call hundreds of people incoherent.
I live in liberal Canada and am athiest, and half my family lives in Texas. To be honest, they're all really nice and some of them are pretty cool but they fit the racist and christian stereotype really well though. They kept talking about how Obama was muslim and how muslims were terrorists during the election.
Here's a secret guys: Evolution is theorized upon observings of slight mutations and evolvings over time. It's as good as proven and only stubborn for real idiots deny it since it's insinuated so violently by everything we can see, touch and smell that this is the truth. Evolution is NOT how the world was created, that's called Big Bang and that theory is only a bit more believable than the "when god speaks shit happens" yeah, well, he better watch his mouth.
Creationism are myths/legends passed on from generation to generation through many, many years. It's more fabricated than truth by now, if there ever was any truth to it, because of how humans tend to exagerate everything. we couldn't write coherently 3500 years ago... at least, some 80 year old slave named Moses wouldn't have been able to since we barely even had any symbols. this shit was written down at the earlies a few years before christ... not only that, but the bible was compiled by non-believers, the roman council.. at least the then emperor (around 100 A.D. or so) to quel the christian riotings.
so, not only is the bible a shaky source, it is also the very definiton of bullshit. It's not even made with christianity in mind... it was made to shut the uneducated masses the fuck up... yet, they're louder than they've ever been and it's getting fucking annoying. Texas, either be a part of this world or get the fuck out. at least be happy that we live by Christian ethics and morals unlike yourself and leave it at that. Science is Science. Bullshit is still Bullshit.
if you still don't get it... Creationist myths were fabricated for the intellectual equal of a 4 year old of today. man... in 20,000 years, our ancestors will look at these years, from the 60's bible belt movement and onwards as the grand brainfart of humanity.
imagine a world where the bible was read with a grain of salt, just imagine that. utter bliss.

That's not very Christian. have they ever read the new testament... y'know the one where hate and biggotry is illegal? tell them they're actually Jews and post the results for my sake.

Good man.
No. Atheism means the lack of a belief in a god or gods. Some people go further and believe that no gods exist. These are not the same.
No no no they're the same thing in practice.
There is no "belief version" of atheism. He isn't half-right like you're implying. He's dead wrong.
Does this have to happen in every single religion thread?
Yes
Here's the thing: they can't teach creationism, they can't teach atheistic evolution either.
They have to be fair to both beliefs. The deepest they can go is say evolution is what caused the earth to be made. They can't say that a god didn't make it happen, nor can they say one did.
I'm religious, but I agree, mixing it with science is not a good thing.
Evolution doesn't necessarily have to be atheistic or theistic. It simply provides an explanation for how life changed and adapted over time, not an explanation for the origin of life. That's up to the students to decide.
Exactly. For example, I'm religious, but I believe evolution happened.
What IS a belief is atheism. Saying that evolution happened on its own and that no god exists is atheism, and shouldn't be taught. Just the same, teaching that a god did make the Earth shouldn't be taught either.
The curriculum should be unbiased to both sides.
1) Atheism is not a belief. It's simply a lack of belief in a god. Saying that no god exists is an example of gnostic atheism; saying that there is conclusively no god. Agnostic atheism, however, is saying that we don't know if god is out there or not, but choosing not to believe in him/her.
2) No one says that "evolution happened on its own". Again, evolution has nothing to do with abiogenesis, which deals with how life arose. It's like saying that the theory of gravitation explains how a ball originally started falling, instead of just explaining how it falls.
Atheism is not a religious belief, but in technicality, it is the belief in the absence of a god.

Again, lack of belief != belief. Gnosticism vs agnosticism, broski.
I thought atheism meant one believes that there is no god, whereas agnosticism implies a lack of belief in a god.
Or do I have it backwards?
[editline]a[/editline]
I've been flamed before for saying atheism means a lack of belief in god and that it's called agnosticism.

Atheism = no
agnosticism = i dunno
Regardless of whether you make it a belief in a lack, or a lack of a belief, it falls into a black or white area. There's little difference in classification.

For fucks sake what do you people not get about Evolution being totally separate from Biogenesis? Evolution happened after life started, there's nothing religious or not about it.

no dude, the earth to be made
he's saying evolution deals with the accumulation of matter in space

it's a lack of a belief. learn what the word atheism means
the prefix 'a' means without, lack of, etc.
the root 'theism' means a belief in at least one deity
atheism
It's the difference between saying you believe the moon is not a giant jellybean and saying you know the moon is not a giant jellybean
I've deduced that Atheism isn't a belief, but an absence of a belief. They don't have belief in a god(s).
This doesn't mean they believe there is/are no god(s) nor do they believe there is. It's just an absence of any beliefs.
However, Gnosticism IS the belief in a god(s), Agnosticism is the belief that there is/are no god(s).

NO
gnosticism = we can know for shizzle if there is a god or not i.e. miracles and shit
agnosticism = we can't know for sure if there's a god or not
there are gnostic atheists, agnostic atheists, gnostic theists, agnostic theists, and lots of shit in between

depents on whether or not you're referring to Agnostic theism or agnostic atheism
atheists "know" there is no god. you need to look up your definitions bubba
