I wonder why nobody was complaining about the old design, but somehow people are defending the new one as if it's better?
I actually like this new interface
Acting like you're entitled to the old, "better" one just makes you sound childish.
Adapt to the change Google has "forced upon" you or use a different email client. It's literally your choice.

people were complaining about the old one with as many petty arguments against it as you are now, but they either stopped caring or realized they could use another email client and solve these life-ruining problems once and for all :-)
To me it seems like they are beginning to force the google drive stuff

It's a free service and I'm not entitled to anything, but I'm struggling to understand what exactly were the people behind the design thinking when they made it. Like, how do you look at the product of what I'm sure were no more than 15 minutes of work and say "yeah, that is definitely more functional, let's go with it"?
And Google hasn't "forced it upon me", it literally forced it upon me - I don't have a choice in the matter.

Dude changing emails is not that easy. I have dozens of accounts working with it.
Of course you get dependent on the service.
And how is this update NOT forced?

I honestly don't understand how my "liferuining problems" are your fucking business, but as I said already I can't just switch the e-mail I've used for so fucking long with the snap of my fucking fingers. :~)
And what my point is, is that I shouldn't have to.
I hate the new change, but at least you can pop out the compose area into a new window and fullscreen it. That's my main gripe with it to be honest, why do they make it so small? It's just like the new YouTube interface, why is half of my widescreen monitor now white space?

If you press this button, you can pop it out into an expandable window if you hate it that much
When was the last time you wrote an entire page of text in GMail anyway? The smaller corner compose window works great

Change happens, this will be removed for something else and no doubt when that happens something better based on feedback will appear. It's not even that bad

I know most people here don't like change, but seriously, I appreciate Google (and Android) much more now that all the services share the same looks. It looks much more professional IMO.
They're both fine but I don't see why they can't coexist..
I hate people like you by the way.
That was completely unecessary.
I don't really mind the new layout but it annoys me that they change it so often. Some more customisation options would be cool in my opinion.
I think, and this is something I agree with, is that Google's reasoning is probably that the majority of people don't use the formatting tools. I don't. But the menu to access them is not very intuitive, so it's a poor solution to a minor problem.
Have you even used it?
I enrolled in the beta as soon it was available. I don't miss the formatting features, but they weren't in the way in the old composer either.
Accusing people of just not liking change, is such hackneyed, effortless strawman of an argument that I'm surprise that anybody can say it with a straight face, much less not have their ribcage explode from the sheer laughter at the notion of saying it un-ironically.

Step 2: Configure it to retrieve and send emails from and through your Gmail box using pop3/IMAP/SMTP
Congratulations, you will never have to worry about the scary concept of change, as long as you don't change your email client!
both of those programs are cluttered GUI disasters that are annoying to use compared to web gmail

You can, that's just the basic HTML view. Here: https://mail.google.com/mail/u/0/?ui=html
If the formatting wasn't in cascade menus I'll think it's a pretty good interface.

Yeah like I'm at a loss as to why they got rid of it in the first place considering they take up a pinky's width of room on the page.

Which is why, if I had to point out which email interface I "like", I would say

:v:
I use the mail client integrated in Opera. Is so god damn useful I can't imagine not having it.
I honestly don't give a damn about it. They changed it, i adapted, there wasn't much to really adapt to. I type what i need to type, i type in names, i drag and drop a file, click send.
I've been using this for months, I didn't realise it wasnt the standard already. There's nothing wrong with it.
The only thing I don't like about the new interface is that the styles are in a weird place and I can't use tab for indenting.
Then again, the styles are now hidden from people that like to italicize, bold, and underline everything...
I can live with this.
Yes, let's use an external application for something as simple as sending an email just because someone had the brilliant idea of changing something that was not only not broken, but worked absolutely flawlessly.
Have you also thought about the fact that a lot of people (me included) use more than one device at any given time and/or regularly need to access their email from someone else's device?
I'm all for change if it brings something positive to the table.
I hate people like you by the way.
That's no problem at all, because you can use IMAP on multiple devices at the same time, and everything will be synchronized on the server. So if you write a mail, and save it as a draft, you can continue to write it on another client.
Yeah the new send email thing fucking irritating.
The think that gets me about Gmail though, and this happens especially on mobile devices, is how they use pictures instead of words for function buttons. It's like a gamble every time I click on something to find out what the hell it does.
