I don't know, this is the part where people like me try to go to news organizations or FBI press conferences to ask in order to clarify one way or the other. It is also the part where people like me get attacked/harrassed for asking questions about what happened.

I'm not condoning harrassment for the answer to questions either, such as was evident in the Sandy hook conspiracy boogaloo.

Simply put: I don't like discounting [i]relatively plausible[/i] things until they are confirmed or denied.

But it can't. The conversation is strictly between the mother and the son. How can you know if the conversations even ever happened.
And let's be honest, if the FBI announced, "no we never talked to the son before." you wouldn't believe them, even if they were telling the truth. You would think they are covering their ass.
Therefore this lie can't die, because the only people who can disprove it (The FBI) you don't trust.

People make up outrageous lies all the time to deal with grief. The 9-11 truther movement, is a good example.
