Is it really Scotlands oil? Shetlanders disagree as thoughts of their own independence grows.
all of the north sea scottish oil belongs to 22000 people
90% of the UK oil should belong to 5 million people instead?
Reading further into it, it looks like they'd need (/want to) to wrangle the Western Isles in as well, or the western isles would have a separate referendum.
I wonder what the official languages would be considering the Western Isles, especially n/s Uist, Lewis, and Harris are basically the entirety of the Gaidhealtachd by themselves. There's a pisspoor number of Gaelic speakers left on the whole, but pretty much all of them make up the majority population of the outer Hebrides and I don't they'd quietly accept secondary representation.
im guessing shetland didn't build the rigs though
The rigs themselves aren't all that important. Remember that it's usually private companies operating them. Pretty large proceeds go to the population.
Even so, You can use pretty much the same argument in regards to Scotland. The population of Scotland is pisspoor compared to the UK as a whole and let's say the seperation is done in part on population counts not merely land. Scotland would be looking at pretty much zero military, zero oil And similar.
Pretty much the entirety of the Scotland argument is based on - these areas ought to be Scotish and it doesn't matter how big or small the population is. They should land squarely in our hands.
Well there's a lot of talk about how its Scottish by the independents, but currently its actually the UKs. Its nationalist talk trying to separate themselves from the rest of the UK with "Scotlands" this and "Scottish" that, its simply to force peoples perceptions into thinking they're different to the United Kingdom.
Given that Scotland is not a sovereign state, it has no effective maritime boundaries; and any claims Scotland may assert are subsumed as part of claims made by the United Kingdom.

?
This seems like a non-issue really, usually countries/provinces/counties have defined borders that define the jurisdiction of legislative assemblies, given that scotland is devolved already, it's likely already has jurisdiction over predefined and largely unambiguous scottish-jurisdictions which are likely to include the north sea oil areas, unless I'm mistaken.
the oil belongs to murrica pls hand it over
The article is actually saying the very opposite - that shetlanders consider themselves shetlanders first and foremost. They're not british, not scotish or nor. They're shetlanders.
I wasn't talking about the article, I was talking about Sableye's comment.

Scotland doesn't really need a military anyway.
Worse case scenario, they'll cast Raise Dead on William Wallace.

this joke is both funny and topical
In the last minute china comes out of left field and claims it as their territorial waters.
I remember there being a guy in Lerwick who was always campaigning for an independent Shetland, it was only ever him and he would stand outside one of the banks, and just shout his ridiculous propaganda at people. No one ever thought it was a good idea, and I remember a lot of people making fun of him.
I can't say that I've really heard much talk about Shetland becoming independent if Scotland does, but if Scotland were to become independent, I think it would be a much better idea for us to be part of Norway. But I think technically, Shetland belongs to Denmark somehow.

Or so I've heard anyway.
Can't speak for modern politics/identity obviously, but historically speaking Scandinavia doesn't really have a better claim to orkney and shetland than scotland/uk does.
Who do you think built those hundreds of Brochs, and heap of pictish stones? (hint: not the old norse) Fortriu could reasonably be referred to as the genesis component of modern scotland, and it's clear that Orkney and Shetland were integral components of Fortriu prior to the point where some Norsemen basically showed up and killed everybody.
Likewise, taking off (figuratively) for norwegian nationality with a shit-tonne of iron age artifacts that by all rights really belong with the rest of the mainland collection would be totally not cool
What do the Shetlands have other than sheepdogs?

Only a majority stake in the north sea oil I guess :v:
Tavish Scott says around 67 percent of North Sea reserves lie within Shetland coastal waters
