hth almost everyone in this thread has greatly misused the word "metabolism" it has almost literally nothing to do with what you think it does.

He is right, because people use "metabolism" as a term that describes how much energy they burn, but it basically is the sum of all the building and breaking down going on in the body, but energy expenditure in the human body is due to three factors:
1- Physical activity
2- Thermogenesis (since we are warm blooded, keeping the body temperature stable requires constant energy, whether it is shivering or sweating)
3- Resting Energy Expenditure (REE) (this probably is what people are trying to say when they mention "metabolism", it basically is the amount of energy the body spends when it is at rest {not sleep, rest in this context means no activity whatsoever, a coma for example}, so it can be considered the minimum/constant energy expenditure the body has).
This is balanced out by the amount of energy you receive from what you eat. The body constantly adjusts this balance to keep the energy intake and use equal, so if you always eat the same amount of food (always have the same food intake) after a certain amount of time you will stop gaining weight, because the body will adjust to the new energy intake level and adjust thermogenesis and REE accordingly, so there is no way you can gain weight indefinitely by always eating the same portions.
However since voluntary control is so powerful in humans, you can keep increasing the amount you eat (consciously or subconsciously) which will result in constant weight gain. The body still adjusts by upping REE/thermogenesis, but it can never keep up. So long story short, a fat/overweight/obese person actually does spend more energy than a skinny person in a resting state, so obesity is a problem (usually) associated with energy intake, not energy use. This does not mean all obese people are fat because they lack self control or are lazy bums, there are multiple valid medical explanations for many types of obesity, which are due to hormonal imbalances and other conditions.
Problems that are related to energy use in the body can also lead to/cause obesity, but usually they have much more serious effects or cause extreme obesity in a very short amount of time and not a steady but uncontrollable weight gain in most obese people.
The only problem is when people here go "I'm skinny I have a fast metabolism fuck yeah" when in reality their body is full of visceral fat and that is very dangerous which can lead to type 2 diabetes and heart failure. Looking slim is one thing, being healthy is quite another. There have been numerous studies on it, U.K. scientists have created fat maps using MRI, close to half the women and more than half the men with normal scores had excessive levels of internal fat deposited around the heart and liver, and streaked through under used muscle much like a well-marbled steak. Diet alone is not enough to protect our bodies from disease. While dieting may help us look better in a bathing suit, it could also cause our bodies to change the way it stores fat.
In short, if you're one of those idiots that has a fast metabolism and constantly binging on junk food because "I can't get fat" then you're in for a wake up call because your insides are fully of it, wrapping around your organs and killing you as chemicals from the fat leak into your blood and organs and give you numerous worries. You don't even need to be eating junk food 24-7 for it to happen.
anyone else read the last few sentences and imagine a person just melting into a goop of guts and doritos?
And this is any better?

I think this is far more disgusting than severely obese people.
This is pretty for you?

I think everything has to have an moderation. Both underweight and overweight people look disgusting.
The one thing I've learnt from this facepunch section is to not even fucking care anymore really.Almost everything in this world already gives you cancer/wants you dead anyway.
I eat fuck loads but never seem to put on any weight. Fast metabolism master race.
You aren't eating enough. I always thought I was skinny because my metabolism but when I started lifitng I went on a diet of 3000-3500 calories a day through 8 meals and snacks and put on a lot of weight.
They're still not adjusting BMI for muscle mass? Scrubs.
This thread make me want to test my BMI for the first time.

you know i just realized that said larger, not older.
you're absolute correct too.
yay, im neither skinny or fat
I feel fat as fuck at 76 kg and 170m. I used to weight at least 8 kilos less when I worked out at the gym. High metabolism from when I trained combined with a Computer Science degree was disastrous to my weight.
I'm skinny as a stick and I know I'll be overweight when I'm older because of the way I eat. I'll refer back to the post in 30 years from today.
Do it my way, I eat all the things I want but I also workout and run alot, I simply enjoy sprinting and jogging.

i am going to die
oh well
you're just as bad as fat people saying they can't lose weight
eat more.
My diet consists of a massive amount of high calorie/fatty foods and my current weight is 140. Which is classified as underweight for a 20 yr old male. My girlfriend ats far less than me and watches what she eats and she weighs ten pounds more. Genetics, I would say, do play a factor
well, i hope that the people who eat junk the whole day knows that even if they dont get fatter, they arent going to end up all healthy and shit.

Eek, first the sitting-down-shortens-your-life thread, and now this?
I'm 56kg and approx. 185cm. Shit.
If I'm so unhealthy why don't I have heart disease and high blood pressure?
