For those bringing up laws, the United States Surpreme already said public agencies have no obligation to protect you Still would have Molotov'd their firetruck though
Good thing this shit doesn't happen in sweden. USA is really turning to shit, isn't it? I suggest all american facepunchers to move to sweden and get free health care and such.
So the first thing the operator did in an emergency is check if he paid the fee. I'm sorry but if that isn't completely backwards stupid then I don't know what is. I mean, okay, he didn't pay, but they could have charged him triple for missed payments and out of contract job.
Good God... that is just shameful. Heroic firefighters indeed. Who the hell thinks it's a good idea to go back to privatizing public services like firefighting and police work?? Fuck republicans.
Cranick's wife, Paulette, doesn't blame the firefighters. "They're doing what they are told to do. It's not their fault," she told WPSD.
This lady is very respectable, but still, just no.
They probably would have got in trouble if they had.
Stupid post makes me think you're a stupid poster.
That's criminal.
No apparently not
I'm from England. This is satire about American healthcare, right?
YOU ARE NOT ENTITLED TO THINGS YOU DONT PAY FOR.
The point is that they stood around IN FRONT OF THE HOUSE doing NOTHING. They watched a man's home and pets burn down because he didn't have $75 on the spot.
This used to happen all the time in ancient rome.
Firefighters used to be a pricate service, somehow, republicans think that the last 40 years of firefights has been terrible, and it's now worth looking at re-privatization. It's fucked up. it's obviously not a good thing.
Wow, does FP have to make everything political and, by extension, the inevitable fault of conservatives? I can't believe you people blame the Republicans for things all the way back before the party even existed... More on topic, though, I don't think what the firefighters did was right, but they were probably under some sort of legal penalty (possibly not a small one) if they did move forward and help.
If a person was inside and died, would that count as murder or manslaughter? Kinda like if ambulance comes but does nothing to save someone, what would that count as? I know only animals died in this fire, I am just wondering.

They could've at least saved the fucking pets. Jesus.
Those firefighters deserve their houses burnt down.
It's like saying a Police officer will be forced to standby and watch as you get raped in front of him or murdered. What would his excuse be? "I didn't get paid so I did the only thing I could do. I made sure he didn't rape someone who did pay."
Reminds me of a real life quote: "Hey, I work for the Marconi Company, I'm not part of the crew. Bug off." - Titanic radio operator, upon receiving word that there are icebergs ahead. Yes. He failed to inform the bridge of an unbelievably hazardous condition that threatened the lives of everyone aboard ship because HE DIDN'T GET PAID TO DO THAT.
Thats strange, I thought the American fire department was socialized.
In my opinion there's something inherently fucked up in the privatisising of prisons and fire departments. No money-making business should ever be paid essentially based on the amount of inmates in its prisons, or the amount of fires it's putting out. Terry Pratchett expressed its absurdity pretty well in some book, but I can't find the quote.
Yes but most prisons are on the state level, and fire dpartments are on the city/county level And as we all know, unlike the Federal Government, states, counties, and cities can't print money out of thin air to pay for services
Put a shotgun to his head and say "no you pay ME $75.00 and I wont shoot you" what if there was a person in there? [editline]05:29PM[/editline]
Reminds me of a real life quote: "Hey, I work for the Marconi Company, I'm not part of the crew. what the fuck man
If I was a fire fighter, why should I run into your house that is burning to the ground to save your dog, while putting my life on the line? I would really.. just because I like dogs. This is just another excuse for money hungry morons to do less work. What was once a noble and respectable job, saving many lives.. turned into greed, saving lives to who can afford.
Thanks god I live in a welfare state.
This is embarrassing to think of, it gives a real bad name to firefighters.
Anyone knows the name's of those firefighters? Gonna' send an hitman after them >:( (RIP Doggies & Cat :( )
The house probably had books inside, it deserved to be burnt down.
The point is that they stood around IN FRONT OF THE HOUSE doing NOTHING. They watched a man's home and pets burn down because he didn't have $75 on the spot.
No, they didn't pay the fee when they were supposed to. If all they wanted was 75 bucks, I mean shit, someone would have lent the dude the money. Hell, I would have paid it for them right then and there. No, instead, they were not on an official list of people they could save, so they couldn't do anything. It might have taken weeks to get them on that list, who knows. Still fucking retarded.
Knowing the Huffington Post, there's probably a bit more to this then they're letting on to.
American capitalism at its finest. I hope you're all happy with living in a country where things like this happen. I'm just glad I live in a country where the state has actually retained some of its humanity, and things like this are publicly-owned. So if my house is on fire, the fire fighters will come and try their hardest to tackle the fire (Volunteer firefighters where I live) and afterwards, they won't ask for a bill, and I know that any healthcare that follows won't be followed by an invoice in the post.

Paramedics/Ambulance may be privately owned though. So cry about it some more, and continue thinking that you're living in heaven. A lot of the citizens in the USA, are not happy with how things are ran. But we have little choice.
sounds like most of you are out for the heads of these firefighters. Here's the deal. In rural areas there are no urban taxes to subsidize the fire department so the cost is just levied on the residents. It still winds up as remarkably cheap insurance. The homeowner made the conscious choice to not pay for the firefighting service so I don't see why the firefighters deserve to be maligned. If you don't pay for a service, you don't get it, plain and simple. He got the shit end of the stick, but if he really cared he'd spend the $75 for the protection. Firefighting costs money. If you were expected to still perform your job for free then nobody would pay the $75 for it, and then they would have no funding to operate the department. These departments have a human life clause where they will attempt a rescue of a person even if it's not paid (but they will be billed.) In this case, it was just property and pets. Nothing worth endangering one's own life for.
