Is there any reason to poach a turtle? Are the scutes valuable? Do they have ivory tusks somewhere?
It's a turtle. I would imagine it's pretty slow to take such aggressive actions. All though the article sounds very silly, there could have been an actual reason to this.. right?

I don't understand, it's basically a rock with scaly legs. The most it would've done is nipped at him, but he obviously isn't a giant fruit, so I doubt it would have found him appetizing.
To be fair, the tortoise was wearing body armor so a taser probably wouldn't work. Maybe he could have put the tortoise in a choke hold, but I wasn't there so I can't say for sure the tortoise wasn't prepared to counter such a move.

Certain species of turtles can be dangerous, but tortoises are all pretty much vegetarians.

Turtles can be a pain in the ass because they're stubborn as fuck. My aunt had one of them and it had its mind set on headbutting the fuck out of my feet and legs, which was cute for the first ten minutes then it became really annoying.
I wouldn't shoot one in the face for it though.

Not really vegetarian so much as they become too big and too slow to actually hunt any animals so they just eat veggies instead. Younger tortoises will eat meat too.
