It'll probably start with an ARG forcing us to replay the Half-Life series for clues, making us all hyped again. That's what I'd do if I were as crafty as Valve.
Alright, I skimmed the thread but didn't notice anybody else post this, so let me know if I'm late.
If you look very closely at that HL3 logo (I found it by clicking and dragging it on a mac, making it transparent) there is an aperture science logo surrounding the lambda. It's very faint, but it's there. Try looking at your screen from weird angles.

But VALVe needs to prepare the servers. If these holiday sales are raping the servers to short downtimes, lag and overloads, imagine the server combustions when HL3 came out.

It is, I remember a rant from a Valve employee being pissed because he hates it when the "community trolls the community".
I was talking to some friends earlier, and someone brought up a good point. What if Valve just doesn't yet know [I]how[/I] to make a good Half Life 3 that's not redundant of its predecessors? They could just be completely stumped on how to make a new entry to the series that's fresh and will amaze the fans.
I have a hunch that they are creating a new Source engine and Half Life 3 will be the first title to show it off. I would't be surprised if they are barely in the planning stages for the actual game.
