Love how the OP framed the message to make her look absolutely retarded. No one so far seems to realize the fact that she was actually STOPPING the conversation (assuming it was a "conversation"; we don't know how long this had been going on), for the sake of safety. Are you really going to take the ridiculous position that sending one short text in order to politely end a conversation makes you a reckless hipster douchebag? (I include "hipster" because I believe that's where a lot of the popular hatred is coming from here.)
Like Days said, it would be much easier and safer to just not reply until it's actually safe to, explaining "Sorry I didn't reply within 90 seconds, I was going driving and wanted to be safe." If anyone blames you for not texting while driving, then they're assholes, and you should tell them as such. Nobody mentioned hipsters. At all. What the fuck does texting have to do with hipsters? Hell, the word never even entered my mind during this thread until you brought it up.
Natural selection at it's best.
You have no idea how natural selection works.
The real irony is that everyone in this thread is using the word irony wrong.
What is it with the word 'Irony' that makes people not understand it. They always refer to non-ironic things and also sarcasm as 'ironic' What makes the word so... misunderstood?
I got mugged after texting "oh god it's dark and scary out here"
I got mugged after texting "oh god it's dark and scary out here"
at least you weren't raped
Natural selection at it's best.
Because the human race will evolve to become immune to driving into tankers
It's the opposite of irony. It would be ironic if she wrote "Driving and facebooking IS safe! Haha." but she wrote "Driving and facebooking is not safe! Haha." so it's not ironic.
Ynori anyone?
Damn, we lost another future brain surgeon.
See this is why you have to have control over your phone while driving. My phone sits next to me and regardless of who calls or texts I wait until I can pullover to see. There are people who literally text with two hands on the steering wheel and wonder why people crash.
First off, I'm pretty sure those laws already exist. Second, this is her own stupid fault and this would have happened whether it were legal or not.
Not necessarily in her state. It's a state law thing.
She had it coming, but it's a shame it actually coming..
I got shit on after I texted my friend "Going to the bathroom, it's not safe to text while using the toilet!"
I got shit on after I texted my friend "Going to the bathroom, it's not safe to text while using the toilet!"
A crocodile's going to emerge and bite your dick off next time you do this
The way she died and making a public event like that is just yanking the dogs chain at this point.
The event is a few months old.
I'm gonna write a book while driving a Formula 1 Race Car.
According to the phone records, Sauer, 18, was posting on Facebook about every 90 seconds.
what the fuck so what she makes a status about everything she does? "lol taking a shit" "lol opening door" "lol opening car door" "lol putting seatbelt on" "lol starting engine" "lol backing out of driveway" "lol accelerating" etc etc.
hope the tanker driver is okay
There should be a button or setting that automatically tells people that you are driving if they try to call or text you.
I can do that with Tasker. Best $6.50 I ever spent on an Android app. First, I create a variable, %driving (really it can be named anything as long as it has the % in front but I like giving meaningful names). I set it to 1 if I'm driving and 0 if I'm not. Then I make a Toggle Driving task. Simple, just check to see if %driving is set to 0 or 1, and then do the opposite, also silence/unsilence my notification volume if necessary. I can put this task on my home screen. Then I make a new profile. The context? "Received Text" event. When this happens, I check to see if %driving is set to 1. If it is, I have it send a text to whoever texted me, automatically, and it contains something along the lines of "I'm busy driving, so I had my phone tell you this automatically! I AM A PHONE WIZARD". And since I have my notification volume set to 0, it won't even tell me I have a new text message, further lessening my distraction. I can even set it to ignore Facebook and Twitter SMS, though that takes a little bit of fucking about.
Darwin Award of the Month right there. I text and drive at times, but never going beyond 45 mph. At higher speeds, you need complete attention to the roads. That woman was just an idiot and she paid the price for it.
Wow, you really shouldn't be allowed to drive if you think that qualifies as 'safe'. You can kill a child with a car at ten miles an hour, let alone 45.
Driving and facepunch is not safe
"I can't discuss this now. Driving and facebooking is not safe! Haha."
If it's not safe to do it, why were you doing it in the first place, you dumb broad?
Remember folks: the universe is completely random. There is no meaning in this tragedy. Move along.
This is one of the times when I hate irony the most.
Should I laugh or cry? Or maybe both? I'm so confused...
I only READ texts at a STOP LIGHT. I don't reply unless I'm parked somewhere, like a drive-thru or a parking lot waiting for someone. I hardly even answer my phone. Only for a split second to tell them I'll call them back. I'm a careful driver and keep all my attention on the road at all times. This here, is just plain stupid. I can't stand shit like this.
My mom is one of those types that believe everything she sees on Opera and the 6 o'clock news. I refuse to believe that using a hands free headset to talk reduces your chance of being in an accident. It's the whole paying attention to the conversation, not angle you have your arm bent at to hold the phone or wheel that causes the distraction. Infuriating woman... talks on her 'super safe hands free' setup on her car, then rips on me for playing my music directly from my phone. "DON'T USE YOUR PHONE WHILE DRIVING IT'S UNSAFE" she yells, while I try for the 1,000th time to find a difference between the music on my phone, and the music on the radio (other than the fact that the music on the radio sucks).
-snip- i cry every time

Using the steering wheel as a sort of table... [editline]7th March 2012[/editline]
I'm gonna write a book while driving a Formula 1 Race Car.
Funny you should mention F1, there's a video on YouTube of an F1 driver driving an F1 car one handed using his phone to record it. Strangely enough road safety campaigners went slightly mad.

Not like those crazy morons who do it with five, what bunch of idiots those guys are!
