It was NBC when I went down to the kitchen, it was "breaking". There were four americans on board and one of them was a baby was also mentioned for some reason.
No they were just updating that it is still missing and throwing in something about there being Americans on board and one of them is a baby. I don't know why that makes it worse, but hey whatever. Assuming you watched the same update I did right after hannibal
There are reports that they located the (or a) emergency locator beacon.

There is the possibility of minutes of terror as you fall out of the sky from 35 thousand feet.

Ok it crashed.
and It crashed in the south china sea...:(
I don't know if anyone here speaks Malaysian(?) but here's a link to where you can listen to the air traffic control in Lumpur. http://www.liveatc.net/flisten.php?mount=wmkk2
I'd figure if anyone's gonna have the real info it would be them.. I really don't know how any of that works so you know sorry if this is garbage.

ATC has given up on it by now. The plane probably never had enough fuel to fly for more than 2 extra hours past it's destination.

and it would have landed somewhere by now. It crashed.
and it would have landed somewhere by now. It crashed.
Yes... I said that above.
This is why I'll never choose Malaysia Airlines. Air Asia all the way!
This is a dumb generalisation. Any plane can crash regardless of brand or quality. The chance of you in a plane crash is rarer than winning the lottery or getting bitten by a snake.
Yeah I just thought maybe they'd say on ATC if they find the crash site, y'know
Yeah I just thought maybe they'd say on ATC if they find the crash site, y'know
ATC needs to focus on air traffic. Not rescue operations.
They transmit the last known location to the correct people, send the person who was handling the plane off to be interrogated and move on.

If it crashed in the ocean, which it probably did, they might never find it or it'll take weeks to recover whats left.

Black box underwater locator beacon broadcasts for 30 days after activation.
They don't fill the fuel tanks up all the way unless they're going over seas. One way or the other, gents, in a few days they'll either have to land...or they'll crash. By god i hope it's the former.

...A few days?
Black box underwater locator beacon broadcasts for 30 days after activation.
Yeah but if the plane ditched in the ocean and the ocean is fairly deep, you really can't find it, that has happened for a lot of incidents such as Air France
Yeah but if the plane ditched in the ocean and the ocean is fairly deep, you really can't find it, that has happened for a lot of incidents such as Air France
Yeah, divers would have to go searching for it and have to listen for the subtle beeping.
Black boxes are never a sure fire way of finding a plane, only for learning what happened.

They are saying they have located a signal. They got a area.
What they want is the CVR (Cockpit voice recorder) to understand what was going on, the black box just tells them the data of the planes movement

That also happened with Air France but they couldn't find it in that 30 day gap

They are both called "black boxes" because slang and crap. They both have locators.

Until they get a ship out there, we have no idea. Probably in a hour.

I can, kinda hard to hear from all the static though

I'm sure that we've developed black boxes to emit radio than just a sound..

moment where the radar signal was lost.
this is fucking depressing.

They are not saying much of anything interesting. It is all in english also.
...A few days?
It depends on how full their tanks are. If their tanks were full it has at least 16 hours before it has to land, longer if everything goes smoothly, so as a far end estimate, a few/couple days or however you wish to put it.

Normally they refer them as CVR and Black Box but yeah whatever, just hope they can get to it in time, I hope there's at least some survivors but if it ditched in the ocean it is highly unlikely anyone survived the impact

I just assumed they would speak Malaysian and didn't even load it
