It depends on how full their tanks are. If their tanks were full it has at least 16 hours before it has to land, longer if everything goes smoothly, so as a far end estimate, a few/couple days or however you wish to put it.
After the plane looses all fuel, it has 45 minutes in the best case scenario to get on the ground by gliding. There is no button they press to switch the engines to fuel saving mode.
16 hours is on a full tank. They most likely had enough to get to where they are going +2 hours.

And you will be fine.
Vietnamese media now quoting Vietnam navy admiral Ngo Van Phat as saying ‪MalaysiaAirlines‬ flight ‪#MH370‬ has crashed into the ocean 153 miles south of Phu Quoc island.

Forgot about that scenario
My dad just got sent out this morning, for a urgent flight to Kuala Lumpur. Told me its because the press needed him, so they send him and his other colleague. Hopefully he comes back with some good news.
Dammit today was supposed to be his off day :c
UPDATE [12:37]: Tuoi Tre, a leading daily in Vietnam, reports that the Vietnamese Navy has confirmed the plane crashed into the ocean. According to Navy Admiral Ngo Van Phat, Commander of the Region 5, military radar recorded that the plane crashed into the sea at a location 153 miles South of Phu Quoc island.
Fuck.
I sure hope its not because of aircraft maintenance.
MAS had a massive loss recently after they managed to lose twice the amount of profit they collected the year before. I sure hope they decided not to cut down on maintenance which might just be the cause of this.
Well since thet crashed in the ocean there is a high chance of survival. I hope that pilot crash landed it well..
Well since thet crashed in the ocean there is a high chance of survival. I hope that pilot crash landed it well..
Lets just hope it was a controlled ditch and not a result of the aircraft breaking up entirely mid air. I hope those people are ok, this is so messed up.
I'm flying to Malaysia in 5 days too...
Oh well.

If it suddenly went off radar it probably broke up, if the fuel ran out or there was an electronic failure the APU would have enough power to the radio and flight controls. The fact that there was no transponder squawk of an emergency aboard makes me wonder if there was a bulkhead failure because of maintenance. I hope I'm wrong

They're probably already pulling maintenance logs seeing if anything looks out of the ordinary
The bad news obviously, is that it crashed. The good news is that there is a higher survival rate of crashes in the ocean than land. If they crashed into land in this particular case it would have been much, much worse. If there are survivors, I sure hope that they are found ASAP.
Although survival would be higher with crashes into the ocean, it's been 7 hours, chances of survival in the ocean drop way more rapidly than land after the initial crash. Looks pretty grim.
And they say 777 is lucky.

I think I watched a show once where they said that if the plane crash lands on water in high speed, the water tension would be like solid concrete. It was one of those cheap-o looking shows that aired in the afternoon so I hope they were wrong. :(

Yeah it would be nice if we all could just aim for the next little pool when we accidently fall from a height and end up undamaged like in Half Life.

This is true. After a certain speed the water can hit you just like a solid.
This is true. After a certain speed the water can hit you just like a solid.
That's also why when you dive from high places (well, when you dive in general) you put your hands in front of your head in an arrow shape so that your body has minimal resistance against the water, if you hit it belly on it will hurt like a bitch because the hit is distributed over a larger surface area.
I have seen the aftermath of a plane crashing into water.. limbs everywhere.
there were 2 new zealanders on board the plane rip
Well since thet crashed in the ocean there is a high chance of survival. I hope that pilot crash landed it well..
I've heard pilots say that with modern jet planes, there is no such thing as "Crash landing in water".
As soon as the engines touch the water it's gonna be torn to shreds.
I think all Planes should be waterproof and can float after this incident.
