Wonderful argument, thanks for contributing.
They shouldn't be banning people for it but they could easily add a blacklist feature so you can avoid playing with people you don't want to interact with.
These people need to understand that in a Video Game, virtual interaction is specifically acceptable BECAUSE it's not real, that's why we don't blink an eye when we're shooting, stabbing, and blowing each other the fuck up. You consent to the interaction of others by participating, No one is forcing you to be there. If you don't like it, Block or leave.
But do you think that'd be enough for people that don't know any better until everyone wises up?
It's a little bit better of a situation than say twitter since to get around blocks and bans you have to buy a new account. They just have to notify people that the tools exist when they do, also one thing I forgot to add, if someone gets blocked often, it should also automatically notify the devs/moderators with logs.

This is different though, because the intent of the game really isn't to be harassing (this isn't really sexual assault) people. No one is also forcing people to be cunts.
But ofc, it's up to the developers. If they decide they don't want the behavior, then those doing it can fuck off.

Vaguely pantomiming groping at where your chest would be if it was real life in a video game that doesn't even have bodies absolutely does not warrant this kind of reaction and certainly doesn't make it worthy of the news.
Unless you mean that because of her reported real life sexual assault experiences she's justified in reacting this way because of some PTSD related sort of thing, which even then is at least a little bit of a stretch and still doesn't make it news worthy.
While I'm not surprised about the backlash, I'm still disappointed. The people quoted in the article are definitely misguided in thinking that this the developers' fault and CNN is dumb for thinking this is newsworthy, but let's be honest. She was sexually harassed, which merits the kind of anger and disgust she has, and if you actually read the post she made, none of it is directed at anyone but the other player.
I agree, this was definitely harassment. I'm just disappointed in people like Wu doing thoughtless things like blaming the devs, or implying that this is systemic in game development or indeed VR itself, or that games glorify certain negative behaviors and encourage imitation.
"The men that make these games genuinely don't seem to understand that it's sexual assault," game developer Brianna Wu told CNNMoney. "Women barely work on these teams, so there's no voice of conscience."
Mechanically what could you even do here to prevent it? Is there going to be a trigger added to chests and crotches now? That might work but it would be pretty sordid to implement your own rape detection that differentiates between twatting, punching, and accidentally clipping into someone. I don't imagine a woman on a team would necessarily contribute ideas like "virtual rape detection" either. It's not a question of morality it's more of a question of "did you anticipate all this" like with computer viruses.
Also all online games could use a report system even if it's coop.
so if this counts as virtual sexual assault, then whenever you teabag someone in a game it's also sexual assault(regardless of gender)?
i mean if we're gonna go here we might as well go all the fucking way

fun fact, apparently that woman works for bioware as a writer now

Does an NPC catcalling you in a game (I have no examples, actually. Does GTA do this? I don't have / play them) count as harrasment irl?
I got raped in HellMOO.
It was a life altering experience.

I'm having doubts that you actually read my post, and instead just skimmed it so you could get a quick zinger in. But, at any rate.
Vaguely pantomiming groping at where your chest would be if it was real life in a video game absolutely does not warrant this kind of reaction
She, a writer, wrote a blog about experiencing sexual harassment in a virtual reality setting, on a site about feminism and technology. What an extreme over-reaction. Did you at all read the actual post she made? Because none of it is extreme, it's actually fairly calm, even when describing how she reacted in the moment.

That's basically the initiation rights when someone introduces you to that game or vice versa

Oh, absolutely. This is basically on par with facing sexual harassment in any other game, maybe slightly worse, and I'd argue it wasn't even worth making the original blog post if it wasn't for the fact that this happened in VR. I'd also like to point out that she never called it sexual assault, she called it harassment. But I guess who needs to read into stories when you can just look at the thread title and shit out a post.

Exactly. I hold nothing against the original author, I'm critical of the people blowing it up and calling it sexual assault and placing blame in the wrong places.
I'm currently in therapy for my intense PTSD after an very scary shootout in GTA 5. I witness my best friend get blowned up by a fighter jet. Hopefully I can get welfare as I am too shell-shocked to function in society.
Also, Paramud is right. The news media is trying to start shit for views/traffic. The actual blog isn't even that bad.
There is no user BigBro442 on Steam though
whoops
There needs to be a fine line drawn for sexual assault in video games. Frankly it shouldn't count because you're not being assaulted. It's a fucking game.

The Vive I've used must have been broken. How can I unlock the lifelike stroking and caressing? I'd pay top dollar for that feature.

I'm not familiar with QuiVR so I've got two questions. One, does QuiVR necessarily display your Steam username; two, is it not possible that since this article was posted five days ago he simply changed his username?
what though

Brianna Wu
There's your answer. It's sad that that nutjob ruins the image of trans people everywhere.
While the blog post isn't as bad as the news article is making it out to be, there's still some down right ridiculous statements made.
Remember that little digression I told you about how the hundred foot drop looked so convincing? Yeah. Guess what. The virtual groping feels just as real. Of course, you’re not physically being touched, just like you’re not actually one hundred feet off the ground, but it’s still scary as hell.

What’s worse is that it felt real, violating. This sounds ludicrous to anyone who hasn’t stood on that virtual reality ledge and looked down, but if you have, you might start to understand. The public virtual chasing and groping happened a full week ago and I’m still thinking about it.
If you want to assert that this type of stuff isn't lunacy that's fine, but it's not sexual assault. You can't justify this as sexual assault, no more than you can justify the GTA V rape as sexual assault. This is silly.

She hasn't publicly come out, so most people don't pay attention to her history.
She should be a character in the game.
Just with another name. That would be so damn funny :v:
Reminds me of that hilarious story of someone getting forcefed in SS13, but I just can't find it.

she is so dumb, JUST DISCONNECT FROM THE GAME
"boo hoo i got sexually harassed in VR"
I doubt this "bigbro" guy (sjw's love calling men who are against their psycho ideological craziness bros and shit) actually exists
I remember reading about this a couple of days ago. People searched for BigBro442, and no one got any results. So they either changed the name of the person or they just don't exist at all.
Satire writes itself these days, it seems.
Clearly the game isn't for her then if she can't handle this kind of shit. Nothing was preventing her from just taking the headset off. I swear people just like to make a scene to be relevant.
