Study: Using A Sexy Video Game Avatar Makes Women Start Perceiving Themselves In A Sexually Objectif
the study doesn't show that women feel more objectified, but that they were more likely to objectify themselves. that's actually pretty interesting.

is it because they are being objectified? do objectified people objectify themselves?
yes it works the same way self esteem works
If you tell a kid he's worthless, he'll start believing it over time

but the interesting thing is how immediate these effects seem to take place. we know that your self-esteem changes gradually depending on your social and internal environment, but such a drastic change in such a short time seems to be very significant.
where you see negativity i see a bit of optimism. this means that adding more "normal"(i.e. not overly objectified) female protagonists and minority protagonists in video games might do good work to undo a lot of internalized misogyny.

we aren't, really.

except in the context of "buy this product and you will get tons of women drooling over you", which is more of a power fantasy than a sexual fantasy.
Good point. It is such a simple solution. I just hope that video game developers actually listen instead of just telling people not to complain or claiming that sexualized women is what the audience demands, etc.
Reminds me of that study showing that having a black avatar makes you less racist.
i always play as the black dude whenever i can because black dudes are cool
[editline]11th October 2013[/editline]
my avatar right now is actually of a black skeleton
[editline]11th October 2013[/editline]
you can tell because of the cool sunglasses
we must force racists to play as the most obvious versions of the ethinicies they hate then, racism solved, global peace next :v:
so that means if im white but talk and act like a nigga, that makes me a non-racist nigga?
so that means if im white but talk and act like a nigga, that makes me a non-racist nigga?
If by that you mean you're white and you go around saying nigga, you either look like an ass who wants to be "ghetto" because they think it's cool, or a racist.
I always pick human unless there is a really good reason to pick a different species. When it comes to customization, I always try to make average-below average looking men. I will happily use the dumpiest looking get up as my main outfit, though I will occasionally use something flashy. I wonder what that says about me?
For the record: I consider myself below average looking. I don't mean i try to make characters look worse than myself.
Why do they insist that rape is not victim's fault? It's not right. The victim can provoke the rapist too. Not like the victim is to blame - both victim and rapist might be the cause.
That study reminds me of the movie Surrogates.

It is one of those things where pretty much everything can be factor to the rape like for example even the weather.
The least moral thing that you can do is blame the victim though.
The study was spot on. I am a BAE Systems Nimrod now.
I am sort of dubious of the testing procedure.
The Dress manipulation was successful. An independent samples test revealed that participants in the Sexualized conditions
indicated that the avatar was more sexy than participants in the Nonsexualized conditions suggestively dressed:
The Face manipulation was also successful. An independent
samples test revealed that participants in the Self conditions indicated that the avatar resembled them in
the face significantly more than participants in the Other conditions
Nah, sorry, no way, i'm too stupid for this shit.

So if I steal someone's car, is the owner at fault for having such a nice car, that would make a lot of money if I sold it, or be fun to drive around in and show off? Those are pretty good reasons to steal a car I think, if it were a motorcycle it might even be easy.
Or if I break into someone's nice house because the house makes me think they must have valuable stuff? If they didn't want to get robbed, they shouldn't go around flaunting their wealth and having a nice house.
Or if I kill them? Not out of self defense, but because they insulted me and provoked me, so I killed them. Is it their fault? They provoked me after all.
What if I rob a store? Is it the cashiers fault by being so easy to rob? After all, if you didn't want to get robbed, why didn't you get a job that wasn't on the late shift? Why did you get a job in a high crime area?
Do you think this has the same affect on men? You can't deny that men are also sexualized.
Like person11 said, men and women are sexualized in different ways. When men are sexualized they are portrayed with very muscular bodies and are seen as strong and dominant a good chunk of the time (at least in Western media, obviously I can't speak for all media). When women are sexualized they're portrayed as weak and submissive and have voluptuous bodies (large breasts, thin waist, wide hips, etc.) again this is a good chunk of the time (again at least in Western media, obviously I can't speak for all media).

I wouldn't call what happens to men "sexualization". It's not very sexy.

Obviously not all straight women and gay men find ultra muscular men attractive but there are those that do, just because you personally don't see it as potentially attractive doesn't mean there aren't people who do find it attractive.

I guess I should have said that the purpose isn't to sexualize.
Women are made to look "sexy".
Men are made to look "powerful".

oh boy, not this again, for the zillionth time, women tend to(keyword "tend", its not a rule) prefer men with leaner bodies, not muscular superdudes, thats male power fantasy.

if you notice, there is a distinct lack of this in japanese gaming, thats because men are actually sometimes sexually objectified in japan games(althrough to a vastly lower extend than women, plus men think overly muscular dudes look ridiculous in japan).
I've been doing the same thing with my avatars. heh

For all you know,It might have not ben a high crime area. Nice neighborhoods tend to not have high crime areas where I live. Plus,Some people may not be able to help late shifts[Considering that person may have school,or another job. If they are poor]
Kind of explains my habit of eating the bits of skin around my fingernails.
I just simply taste delicious.
The one time I played an MMO, I played as a dinosaur wearing juggalo makeup named "Shaggy Twodope."
What does that make me?
i like to play as kpop boyband looking characters lol
[editline]12th October 2013[/editline]
i want more games with boyband looking characters tbh they're more aesthetically pleasing

Again as I explained in another comment not all women prefer this I'm just saying that when men are sexualized they are more often then not portrayed as strong (at least in American media). I'm not saying "Hurr durr all women love hunky, muscular men!" nor am I saying it's realistic to what the average woman's preferences are. It's more what some western media thinks women like in a man. Also linking to Kotaku unironically, you might as well link me to a edgy self-proclaimed radfem Tumblr blog or SRS while you're at it :v: .
So I guess patriarchy is again to be blamed and men are evil and men should do something to not make women objectify themselves?
[sp]Ever thought the women which objectify themselves, like objectifying themselves? Kinda like putting make up on herself to look like a piece of art? How about we let them do what they want. It is not like they have no brain and can´t think for themselves.[/sp]
The victim can provoke the rapist too.
please stay away from women
