The urge to neurotically clean oneself and everything around oneself is a recent one. Go back just a hundred years and you find it much more acceptable to bathe maybe once a month. Go back 200 years and baths were something only the rich did once a month or so.
Perfume was also muuuuuuuuch more popular back then, for obvious reasons. :v:

Actually, ancient egypts were very clean, romans had public baths in cities but in general everyone who had access to bodies of water (and as a reminder, settlements used to be builts around them for the most part) would just dip regularly one self & clothes into it.
In medieval times the majority of people had bathtubs to fill with rainwater but baths were occasional (as the source of water was), Rich people already used to wash regularly, but not yet daily.
Not only that, but 'soap' was used even by babylonians, lol
Maybe you are thinking Mongolians, who didn't ever bathe in bodies of water because they thought their dirt would anger the water spirits.

most animal fecal matter is rich in minerals and nutrition, as well as flora from the intestines
