I think the thing with Sonic was that the games seemed a bit...too ambitious. i mean it started off slowly just with Sonic/Eggman, the cast grew slowly with Tails (2), Knuckles (3), maybe even Amy (CD/R) despite seemingly being retooled in 3D era. it seemed like a large shift to go from 2D based games with somewhat grim plot to 3D games where villains literally plops out of nowhere, even Eggman is shoved aside by some other villain who upstages him. Canon is weird, characters came by the boatload, most reoccurring characters sharing similar appearances. as good as the 2 Adventure games were, chances are they're the games that attracted the most bile...and the most new age fans. you could say that the Sonic series might be more likely to wind up hurt, just because they constantly attempt to add random non-animal characters for story or non-eggman villains. Elise? Shahra? how about the weird series swerves like Excalibur Sonic, Werehog Sonic? Or maybe the whole Sonic thing came about because it attempted to be a rival to Mario. Like Sonic, Mario introduces characters all the time, but most only exist in spinoff games (Fawful, Waluigi), so the cast is naturally just the main 4 (Mario/Luigi/Peach/Bowser), they have no canon to speak of besides small throwbacks to other games, the series rarely stumbled except for possibly Galaxy 2 and that was just because of the allegations of reused content and fan-favourite Rosalina doesn't appear [sp]until the after-game[/sp]. as a series, the cast is static but the platforming can go in different ways. Still unusual how Rosalina suddenly jumped from one-time game character, to featuring in Mario Kart 7, to eventually becoming playable, to becoming a NEWCOMER in Smash Bros 4. and the Kart thing wouldn't look so glancing ages ago since she came with Queen Bee, Wiggler and a Lakitu: Mario Kart is a series where [B]Baby[/B] Daisy is invented from whole cloth and Funky Kong came from nowhere for some random reason. (Metal Mario is almost mainstream at this point. within the Kart seires) Probably too much yapping, but a major problem with the Sonic series is that it's a one trick pony, Sonic gets all the spotlight despite characters who has their own thing. Tails hasn't done anything with machines since Adventure 2 (?). and Knuckles is there as part of the "main 3" despite the Master/Chaos Emerald(s) not being relevant to the plot. as far as what's revealed about Sonic Boom so far, i have to give them that.

It seems that as the series has become more and more of a corpse the fanbase has become more and more weirder and with 20 years of rot now in the series its really become noticeable. Sad thing is that its taken the reputation of the old Mega Drive games (And Sonic CD) along with it.

Every fandom is full of fanatical people, that doesn't mean that the whole thing itself is bad, MLP or Star Fox for example. Sonic on the other hand isn't even that great,fans aside, i mean, it's getting good again, the last titles were good (Lost World too, even if most of the reviews are mixed),but it had a problematic past with all those crappy games with a bad camera, boring gameplay, a fanfic-like story, and gimmicky additions
