If I had submitted "The Rise of Alt-Right" as a satirical novel five years ago, nobody would have published it on the grounds that it was too unrealistic and ridiculous. They would tell me that, as silly as people could be, such a clownish group of fools and racists could never legitimately claim true political power in modern America.

Even during the Holocaust, it is documented that many people cognizant of the facts were often left unconvinced because of the implausibility of it all. Jews fled across former German conquest borders in neighboring countries, convinced that it was all Hitler wanted. Many believed he would be stopped. While Art Spiegelman's [I]Maus [/I]is largely 'uncreditable' in terms of certain factuality (being a visual translation of an oral history given decades after the fact), the opening chapters do a lot to convey how many people either did not believe or did not adequately give credence to the danger because of an inherent assumption that the enemy was reasonable, and had a limit to their demands and intentions. Things were not as bad as they 'should' be (as people thought they would be) in order for such a thing to happen. And then it was too late.
