The method of thinking that people like that use is probably "I'll build this 4-GPU rig, and then I'll mine Bitcoins and get the money back".

The general consensus in the Deep Web thread seems to be you would spend more money on power consumption. Since it takes longer to mine bit coins now and the price of bit coins is fairly low.
