We've had a permanent US presence for the last 50 years
why do we have a base on greenland
i mean how many fucking militaries does greenland have that we need to keep watch on
During the Cold War it was intended as a link in a chain across the Atlantic that would need to remain intact so that our Navy could prevent the Soviets from cutting us off from Europe. Now, it's irrelevant.

The bastards
How? America is going to have to tie down all of their aircraft to prevent them from falling off of the face of the earth.

I hope your troops can do handstands... They're gonna need to

According to Wikipedia we have 178 troops in Australia already.
Hey do you want to do some more nuclear weapons tests in our deserts to ruin the lives of our native people again too? Because thanks for that.
That giant red splotch in the Middle East will be gone soon.
You hope. Besides Vietnam I can't name a country that we've been at war with and do NOT have a military presence, but I'm not a big history buff, or geography for that matter

I thought Nuclear Testing was part of the NT emergency intervention?
we must empower our indigenous community through assisting them reach superhero status
They should set up bases in Russia instead.
Hey Obama, how about set up US base on our own US soil?
But if anything against China, feel free to set up in the Philippines like you do so before. Always welcome.
It's just Darwin, who cares.
But they'll fall off into space, they're not prepared for Australia's upside down nature
I see no problem with this, if America and her allies did go to war with China we'd be fucked. We supply all of their steel so they'd want to seize that pretty quickly, and our small military would have no chance of holding that back. Besides, it's only one base, it's not like theyre occupying us. We also already have Pine Gap so this is nothing new.

Plus, it's in Darwin. Nobody cares about Darwin.

China isn't exactly adjacent to Australia, they can't just go on an all out invasion out of the blue. We have enough allies in south-east Asia to hold out until we get support from Europe and the US.

It's ok you have us to protect you.
im okay with this
I'm not.
Mate of mine's stationed there I think. Doesn't really seem like a big deal.
Darwin is pretty much the middle of nowhere anyway.
I'm not.
get over it
you're paying virtually nothing for the massive resource security that Australia entails
not to mention the US makes a killing off our military' financial 'management'

That was THE BRITISH that did the nuclear testing here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_nuclear_tests_at_Maralinga
I know about this stuff as my Grandpa was present at the nuclear testing (he was not the latest bombed that fucked over the people stationed there who died of cancer from the radiation. He was mending the cars they had there but he got out about 3 days before the last bomb at Maralinga)
Don't go blaming the US.
The problem isn't so much an invasion by China, it's that China's been expanding militarily into surrounding nations, setting up bases and gaining a political and military foothold. And with the threatening talk towards the Philippines and Vietnam, it's better to be safe than sorry.
There's also the fact that besides Australia, every Southeast Asian and Oceanian nation will have China as its largest trade partner within 3 years, overtaking the US.
But I don't support American bases in other nations. We don't need to be world police and world protector, and it costs us shittons of money. If we withdrew our troops from all our military bases across the world, we'd save over 70% of our military budget each year, and save trillions over a short time span, relative to not closing them.
,
I don't see what the problem is; we have US bases all over the world. Germany, Japan, Korea, just to name a few. Our military there will only boost Au's economy, really.
Exactly, I'm glad to see people who actually know a thing or two about our Military presence in other countries.
Often you will find US bases in poor areas of a country. Such is the case here where I am, my last place (Suffolk) and the place before that (Albuquerque)
Then the US and host country set up a SOFA agreement to help the economy. For example: there are gas ration cards used in Europe on American bases because they want the Americans to spend a ton on their gasoline. Along with a ton of other things.
Oh, and the US military doesn't PAY for building up a base, buying the land from private owners. Military bases ( at least in England) are owned by the Ministry of Defense IIRC and they merely LET us occupy that base. When the US has no use for it, they turn it over to the Brits. They did it with part of my old base. They gave some old housing back to the country.
Back on topic, My friend came from Australia. Her dad was doing some "joint mission" with the Australians for about 7 years I think? maybe longer. Point is I would love to see more bases in the Pacific. We already have one on Guam, we used to have one (or a few) in the Philippines. Australia would be an amazing place to go.

You're pulling that out of your ass. I can tell just by this post that you have no idea how the military's foreign relations and agreements/treaties work.

But...but...America...responsible for all problems, it cant be true!
I'm fine with the base thing, if we are going to own the world, we may as well start with the opposite side of it.
Of all places why would china attack AUSTRALIA? It's mostly uninhabited, filled with dangerous animals, has no strategic significance and doesn't have much military power. I'm curious, is the US worried that Australia will need to be 'liberated'?
If you're in SIGINT you could be stationed at Pine Gap.
May dad works there. He once had some friends from online over for dinner, and found out their parents were Pine Gap protesters, so he gave them a souvenir Pine Gap shotglass to give them.

We have MASSIVE steel and gold industries, and very large deposits of Uranium just sitting around for the taking. Our entire country is practically brimming with rare earths.
