"first successful airplane and making the first controlled, powered and sustained heavier-than-air human flight" please note that is a damn specific achievement. they weren't the first to fly, they weren't the first to have powered flight, they weren't the first to build an airplane... [editline]6th June 2013[/editline] http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wright_brothers
It's really not a specific achievment at all. It's just a fancy way of saying that they built a wing with control surfaces that can sustain powered flight.
The events are history, not the cultures.
certain events(wars, wright brother's flight, etc.) are easy to see because they have specific dates and times, but they are all part of a greater context. i'm saying focus on the greater context, not the individual achievement, for general history.

Suddenly, the southern states tried to seceded from the union. Suddenly, airplanes were being built. Suddenly, Germans started killing off Jews. Suddenly, man landed on the moon. Suddenly, the US gave blacks civil rights. Suddenly, the Cold War ended without any major conflict. Know how stupid it is to mention the "general history" without noting the individuals that began or started it? Does no one get any credit for their innovation that invented new things for ages to come or inspired future events? It's dumb to mention the above without mentioning the Wright brothers, Hitler, von Braun, Martin Luther King Jr., or Gorbachev
Fucking christ, Im moving out of this state as soon as possible, full of retards literally.
and in your words history is the domain of a few individuals who created their work in a complete vacuum with no context behind it.
The point where you begin to twist my words is when I jump ship. Good bye, thread.
your examples are actually the exact thing you are advocating. "suddenly the wright brothers built a plane" "suddenly the south seceded from the union"
They're trying to change history...right here...
God dammit Connecticut, stop making me embarrassed to live here.
You too? Glad I'm not the only one.
This would make a good mythbusters episode
I'm just baffled at how close mindedly retarded yawmwen can be.
I am from Dayton, Ohio and I am offended by this (:v:) Seriously though, this is silly.
Another reason why the American education system is utter shit. No wonder we needed captured Nazi scientists to get to the moon.
Shouldn't your government be good then? I mean you've had several Hitlers in the white house since
Shouldn't your government be good then? I mean you've had several Hitlers in the white house since
Who?
your examples are actually the exact thing you are advocating. "suddenly the wright brothers built a plane" "suddenly the south seceded from the union"
At this point your point is so vague that its pointless to debate with you.
removing stuff from the history books sounds like some dumb plot device from an assassins creed game or metal gear. how is this a thing
earlier than that my friend and i know this is the first thing people throw up in situations like this but it actually applies here
Shouldn't your government be good then? I mean you've had several Hitlers in the white house since
Aren't you so edgy.
Now what fucking retard...ah yes...an american politician. Mystery solved.
I am from Dayton, Ohio and I am offended by this (:v:) Seriously though, this is silly.
Hey look another daytonite represent, lets be butt buddies On topic, it should be noted that only the wright brothers actually took their designs of the airplane to the next level to the point where by 1912 they were doing complex maneuvers in the air, flying in the air at high altitudes (well, like 1000 feet high), flying for well over an hour, etc. Nobody who "made powered flight" before this was able to get anywhere close. Even if you made the tall argument that technically they didn't invent the airplane, they were the first people to invent an airplane that actually worked as a feat of engineering and could be used to the fullest extent of what something like an airplane would be able to accomplish. We don't give out awards to people who do a "good half step" to an invention, we give it out to people who actually go all the way and solidify it, prove it, and perfect it. Someone could invent super limited "mind control" that lets you move people's fingers but the invention will only be credited to the person that invents something that actually lets you fully mind control. What efforts were made before the wright brothers were simply experiments at best - the wright brothers were the first people to actually develop an experiment over the years that eventually was able to achieve fully what the invention sought out to accomplish.
