• The strange case of a woman who felt no fear

I wonder how that robbery went then. The guy was pointing a gun at her and she probably just stared at him and asked, "So...you want my checkbook too?" That guy probably thought he was a terrible crook after that.
Guys, make sure you don't confuse lack of fear with absolute courage. Without fear there isn't any bravery.
Bravery and also be substituted with stupidity.
Oh wow haha you watch gore movies to build up some fear-factor in you? When you stumble across a real, mutilated, gory, bloody body, you will fear a lot more than you do when you watch a "scary" movie, I couldn't even imagine how I'd feel if I ever came across a dead body like that. We'll see. :p
What about that one time when I ran into a hobo's corpse that was ran over by a train when I was 17? does that count?
which has completely ravaged her amygdala.
:pervert:
Quoted from the Source for being relevant: Ever tried Ecstasy before, Ultra Violence? :science:
Once, but they were absolute shit, it's hard to find good E in this area. I can't say I'd be willing to test it out as therapy though, none of my friends are exactly trained psychologists. Nor would a real psychologist offer it as therapy, even if I walked in with it already in my system; all I ever got was ECT, which did fuck all. EDIT: The type of ECT that's supposed to alternate on the sides of your brain, not the type where they stick a gag in your mouth and electrocute you...
push her off a building
She should do fear factor, though I think she wouldn't do the bug thing because that's just disgusting.
Natural intuition uses things like fear to work properly.
And on that note, some people's personality types are more disposed to utilizing their intuition than others. Some people have fantastic intuition control and insight, while others completely rely on their direct senses to logically observe/participate in situations in order to gain knowledge (or act upon it). Usually there is a middle ground but also usually people have a stronger capability towards one side of mental processing compared to the other. If you want help with PTSD and don't want the use of medication to help out (at first) then going to a therapist or support group would be the way to go.
[I was going to make an Amnesia joke, but it's too late]
What good is fear in the first place? If none of us felt no fear when a bee came flying around us and we'd just go like "FUCKING MOTHERFUCKING BEE FUCK I WILL EAT YOUUU!" and you crush the bee and you ignore the little sting and you destroy it with your teeth, wouldn't the world be a better place, for us anyway?
No. With no fear, you will also have no fear of death. People would probably kill eachother and laws would be nonexistent. [editline]17th December 2010[/editline]
I agree. Fear is a tremendous motivator, and keeps all your senses sharp. To be honest, I've actually successed supressing most of my fear instinct, by watching gore and horror movies to the point I hardly feel any fear.
Oh really? That's like saying you've trained your sex skills by playing a game, or getting faster by playing mirror's edge.
[sp]http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Thaw_%28Star_Trek:_Voyager%29 don't ban me, not image macro, relevant.[/sp]
I'm pretty sure an image macro is when the picture has words on it
What about that one time when I ran into a hobo's corpse that was ran over by a train when I was 17? does that count?
no matter how many gory films you watch the moment your confronted by someone you don't know with a weapon you will feel fear and your heart will be crushed when you realise that all your 'training' doesn't mean shit because all it's done is not made you fear scary movies (which a lot of people have done anyway)
"This is a regular problem, madam, no need to panic." "I won't...". [editline]18th December 2010[/editline]
I'm pretty sure an image macro is when the picture has words on it
No, that's just how you get George Bush to read stuff.
Ok ok I take that back, it was a really stupid thing to say.
I wonder if that fucks up her ability to reason. Like if someone says I bet you won't drive 150mph in a school zone. Will she do it because she isn't afraid of killing a child or getting arrested?
If shes got a damaged amygdala I'm curious what else could be wrong. I know the article says nothing has been noticed, but surely theres something else.
Remember: we evolved fear for a reason shit keeps us alive
Hasn't it been known for a very long time that amygdala damage causes inability to sense fear?
She'd be the ultimate explorer
Not really, no. The first obstacle she encounters would kill her.
For this woman, she does. He's saying common sense would say her and that she doesn't need to feel fear, which is untrue.
You weren't talking about this woman specifically at the time, though.
All of our emotions play vital roles in our lives. Taking just one out of the equation is a bad thing.
What about that one time when I ran into a hobo's corpse that was ran over by a train when I was 17? does that count?
Okay.. cool? And yeah I guess it counts but.. it's complicated. Anyway what did that mean to you? Did you challenge him into a staring contest or what? Hmmh, I want to find a dead body to see how I'd react.
i want this
I can hear DARPA getting a hardon from here.
i want this
No you don't, how would you know that you, or other people are in danger? You can't live life without fear, fear plays an important role in decision making, and can lead you to make the proper choice. We have emotions for a reason, a living without just one can have a profound effect on one's mental development and life.
I have it too, shit sucks hard :respek: I hope its not drugs, Anti depressants for a year was enough
Is this going to be another thread where this site's users inconspicuously come down with one of the most rare and unlikely conditions in the world? This happened with the cluster headaches thread. You're angsty hypochondriacs and you're not sick.
I entered the thread thinking "I bet a ton of people are going to say they have this too" heh
I wonder if that fucks up her ability to reason. Like if someone says I bet you won't drive 150mph in a school zone. Will she do it because she isn't afraid of killing a child or getting arrested?
She has a lack of fear, not common sense.
It would probably make the game Amnesia incredibly dull and frustrating. Without fear, it's just a mediocre platformer with enemies you can't defeat.
