• [Update] Evolving Robots Learn To Lie To Each Other

How would you even program a robot to learn how to lie? I imagine what the robot would do is look for one and be forced to turn on a light, but how would it decide that it's a good idea to turn off the light? You have to program robots to know what to learn. I don't understand.

I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who knows Asimov's (Four) Laws of Robotics. R. Daneel Olivaw would be proud.
"Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale of Lausanne", is not in France. Dumb reporter ...
Impossible, robots are programmed with these laws: 1. A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm. 2. A robot must obey any orders given to it by human beings, except where such orders would conflict with the First Law. 3. A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.
When did a human even get involved in the experiment, and more to the point, when and where did it say that these laws were programmed in to the robot? And seriously, if you don't try to treat the robots like slaves, tools, or the like, or even worse and try to kill them all off, when they reach sentience, you won't have a robot revolution on your hands. If you were treated like shit and like a slave or tool, and more so if the people doing this to you suddenly decided to kill you all, try to fight back? Equality for robots is a good and smart thing.
You are joking right?
I think he's never read Asimov's I, Robot.
No robots are programmed with the 'Three Laws' anyway, they're no-where near smart enough for that yet anyway.
Party crasher :saddowns:
Fun stuff, a while ago I saw a documentary on animal intelligence, and it turned out deception was one of the most intelligent things an animal could do. It involved a guy standing facing the monkey and a guy looking away from the monkey, both with bananas at their feet. The monkey stole the banana from the guy who wasn't looking, every time. So in my book that's a new milestone for artificial intelligence!
Well, sure if you believe in some kind of a machine spirit or something like that.
Machine spirit you say...?
Holy shit that is awesome. I honestly didn't even know this was possible.
Fucking awesome.
Why would robots attack us anyways? No, honestly, why?
Cuz they have no use for organics

I don't think Asimov's three laws of robotics need to be programmed into robots that can only roll around, flash lights, and scan the environment. They have no clear hardware upgrade, only software upgrades. These robots aren't the B.R.A.I.N., they can't rise up against humanity should they want to. And programming those laws into them would interfere with their ability to adapt. Humanity had to learn morals, they weren't born with them. This experiment is designed to simulate evolution, not exemplify how nice robots can be to each other. Some of the robots ventured into poison zones and flashed warning lights to the others, warning them of the danger. This breaks Asimov's third law, but shows the evolution cycles of the robots. And Zeddy's right. Revolutions only occur when some individuals feel that the system isn't working out for them. If a robot doesn't have any ambition to overthrow humans, then why would it? Maybe the sentient robots actually like to aid humans, similar to the Ood. In this day and age, a sentient robot would spark a huge debate and likely rights would be granted to any sentient robots desiring independence. Democracy allows for adaptations without bloodshed, and it wouldn't be hard for robots to achieve rights that standard humans have.
(Adeptus Mechanicus holy fuck) Machine spirit you say...?
You win one free cookie for figuring out what I meant.
while we're on the topic, by the way, what makes something conscious? if a robot has optical, audible, sensory, and etc organs, and has a complex mind like humans, does it have a "soul"? is it not just like a human made from a different material?
No because humanity created them
while we're on the topic, by the way, what makes something conscious?
I think the most basic way to break it down is, Consciousness is being able to observe it's observations. An insect observes and reacts. A mouse observes and thinks about what it does next then reacts.
OH MY GOD LIEING KILLER ROBOTS, RUN FOR YER LIIIIVEEESSSS i
Party crasher :saddowns:
Someone has to bring some sense into this.
Give it basic things A need to survive, the ability to observe, the ability to observe it's observations, and memory.
The problem is, you have to program rationality, you can't just assume it will do it.
Glados.
It's GLaDOS :colbert:
It's who cares.
But, they are tools.
See, thats the attitude that makes them want to kill you. What the hell do you think slaves were? They weren't considered people. They were considered animals and tools. What makes you different than a sentient robot other than you're squishy and it isn't? A sentient robot can think, learn, and feel. It has emotions just as you do. How is it any different than you really? Its not.
I miss slaves.
Then get back to the kitchen. Helpful advice from Facepunch.
Look at this crafty bastard.
