Trump accidentally mispronounce Namibia as Nambia, everyone goes nuts

Looks like CNN are running low on ammo at the moment, then.
Didn't Obama once say he's visited 57 US states? People make mistakes, man.
I'm all for making fun of Trump and stuff, but this really isn't news worthy. Guy made the same mistake most people have made. Really seems like a slow news day.
Boy howdy I don't like the guy either but shit we have bigger fish to fry these days
This just makes criticism of him look more petty overall.
Okay for reals though what's the deal with Americans putting 'the' in front of random countries names? I've heard 'The Iraq' a few times before, and recently read a book where Sudan was also prefaced with 'the'. What is with this weird, seemingly random definite article in American English?
Alright, to clarify, The Gambia and The Bahamas are the only two countries in the world that have the word "The" officially as part of their shortened name. Unlike some of the other examples given here, this is actually a standard for those two specific countries and not a syntax of a specific mannerism of English despite both having seceded from Great Britain. Saying "Gambia" is thus incorrect when describing the country. Saying "The Iraq" is indeed incorrect, though. From a BBC article on the matter, it seems that other countries are sometimes given a "the" in the past because they were either not independent states at that point or initially described a location or other important facet of that region; however, this is no longer the case and back then was informal to begin with.

As for why people sometimes seemingly misstate "The Bahamas" as "Bahamas", the island archipelago itself does not need to be described with a capital "T" in "The", but the country itself does, hence any confusion that arises in that regard. It's just rare that you need to specify the country without describing the islands or using "Bahamian" as an adjective instead, so it usually doesn't come up.
Because of this, if something is being described as from the country, it's actually acceptable to say that it's "From the The Bahamas" even though it looks like nonsense and contextually would be appropriate to say that it's "From the Bahamas" since the locations of the island chain and country are the same.
Namibians should probably celebrate now as millions of people suddenly realise they exist

Honestly who even knows at this point. The fucker is probably watching looney toons in his head during every important briefing and whatnot
i've never given it much thought but i always say "the ukraine" and just "ukraine" sounds kind of wrong to me. i don't think i've ever heard "the lebanon" though.
"The Ukraine" is a leftover from when it used to be a region in the Soviet Union. Now that it's a country it's just Ukraine.
